No—if you expect another open-world Zelda adventure. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment turns the conflict glimpsed in Tears of the Kingdom into large-scale battles against enemy hordes. It is a companion to that game’s story, not a replacement for its exploration-led style.
How it connects to Tears of the Kingdom
Nintendo describes Age of Imprisonment as the story of Ganondorf’s invasion and the Imprisoning War, events that Tears of the Kingdom briefly presents through its past-era story. Nintendo calls it the “untold story” of the war and describes the game as the complete story of the invasion on its official game page.
That makes the game a natural fit for players who want more of Zelda, Rauru, Sonia, Mineru and the ancient Hyrule conflict. TechRadar and GamesRadar describe it as a canonical prequel, but those are reviewers’ characterizations; Nintendo’s pages establish the direct story connection without making the game a mainline sequel.
What playing it is—and what it is not
Nintendo’s pitch is direct: “Battle hordes of enemies in the untold story of the Imprisoning War!” The central activity is Warriors-style combat, with characters fighting large groups of foes. It does not offer the open-world exploration and broad systems that define Tears of the Kingdom.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction matters more than the shared setting. If you want to revisit the ancient conflict through action battles and a larger cast, the format supports that goal. If you want another exploration-led adventure with the same kind of freedom as Tears of the Kingdom, this is a different kind of Zelda game.
What reviewers say about the combat and missions
Reviews broadly highlight the action, but their praise is not an endorsement of every part of the design.

- TechRadar: Rhys Wood’s November 4, 2025 review, based on 30 hours with the game, praises combat, the character roster and progression. He wanted more character development and more moments for Zelda. His playtime covered the campaign and about 60–70% of side missions and activities; it is his own review experience, not a completion-time estimate for all players.
- GamesRadar: Its review praises Zelda’s role, combat spectacle, performance and added story material. It also finds many missions straightforward and linear, with a limited battlefield scope, and reports co-op play.
So the practical trade-off is satisfying combat and story expansion versus mission structures that some players may find restrictive. The reviews offer individual critical judgments, not a measured consensus.
