PerthNow reported on 14 September 2023 that Kate Moss had been photographed smoking outside a London restaurant. The same report said this happened weeks after she had said she switched to vapes, but it did not identify her original statement. The photo report and the claim about a recent switch therefore need to be treated separately—and neither establishes Moss’s usual smoking or vaping habits.
What did the 2023 report say?
PerthNow reporter Rachel Fenner wrote that Moss, described as 49 at the time, was photographed smoking outside a London restaurant while meeting her brother, Nick, and father, Peter. The article said the photographs emerged on the Wednesday before publication and credited them to MJ Pictures/BACKGRID. It did not give an exact date for the images or independently authenticate them. Read PerthNow’s report.
The article also described Moss as wearing a pink-and-black polka-dot shirt. Those are details reported alongside the images, not independent confirmation of the circumstances.
Did Moss say she had switched to vapes?
PerthNow wrote that Moss had said she “switched to vapes,” but did not identify where or when she made that statement. Without the original source, it is not possible to establish what she meant by “switched,” whether she had stopped smoking completely, or how she used either cigarettes or vapes. A reported photograph of one smoking occasion cannot answer those questions about her broader behavior.

Was she objectively “unrecognisable”?
No objective finding is established by the report. “Unrecognisable” was framed as a reaction by “shocked fans,” but the article did not name those fans, cite a survey, or provide an independent assessment. It should be understood as headline language, not a verified description of Moss’s appearance.
What does the story establish about smoking and vaping?
The report relayed comments from Dr Raman Madan, identified as Northwell Health’s director of cosmetic dermatology, about smoking’s potential effects on premature aging, collagen, skin tone, and laxity. Those comments were attributed to an interview with the New York Post; they are not a diagnosis of Moss or evidence that smoking caused a particular feature in a photograph.

For general health context, NHS guidance says nicotine vaping is less harmful than smoking, but not harmless. Smokers using vaping to quit receive the full benefit only if they stop smoking completely. The NHS explains vaping as a way to quit smoking.
In a 30 May 2023 government statement, Professor Sir Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, said: “If you smoke, vaping is much safer; if you don’t smoke, don’t vape; marketing vapes to children is utterly unacceptable.” The statement supported a role for vaping in helping smokers quit. How to read the headline
- Reported: PerthNow said photographs showed Moss smoking outside a London restaurant.
- Not independently established by the article: the images’ exact date and authentication, and the original source and meaning of the alleged switch to vaping.
- Not a health conclusion: the report does not demonstrate Moss’s usual habits, diagnose her, or show that smoking caused a change in her appearance.
A celebrity anecdote is not evidence for a general recommendation about cigarettes or vapes. Health guidance should be considered on its own terms, rather than inferred from a single reported photograph.
