Hugh Grant turns to psychological horror as Mr. Reed in Heretic, A24’s 2024 thriller about two young missionaries who knock on the wrong door. The first trailer, reported by UPI on June 25, 2024, introduces a faith-testing cat-and-mouse setup written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.
What is Heretic about?
According to A24’s official synopsis, two young missionaries arrive at the home of Mr. Reed and find themselves caught in his deadly game. The film’s setup puts Grant’s character in control of a tense encounter in which the women must prove their faith. The premise is best left there: its pressure comes from the questions and uncertainty, not from knowing how the contest unfolds.

Beck and Woods have said that questions including “why should you believe in God?” and “Why shouldn’t you believe in God?” are at the heart of the film. In a note published by A24 on November 8, 2024, the writers-directors connected the story to their long-running conversations about belief and death. They also recalled scouting locations door to door in Iowa in 2009, when a couple invited them into their home; that anecdote is an origin point, not evidence that the film’s full plot is autobiographical.
Who is in the Heretic trailer?
Grant stars as Mr. Reed, alongside Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East as the young missionaries. Beck and Woods wrote and directed the film. The AFI FEST archive lists the film’s runtime as 110 minutes and links to the official A24 trailer.

The filmmakers’ A24 note offers a deliberately oddball taste of the movie’s mix of religious debate and pop-culture detours: “A24’s Heretic has it all: Bob Ross Monopoly, a framed picture of Elizabeth Hurley’s dog from the 90s, the evangelical Christian girl from Spielberg’s The Fabelmans portraying a devout Mormon missionary, a stilted discussion about the marketing of Magnum condoms, quotes from Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing, a scented blueberry candle from Bed Bath & Beyond’s liquidation sale, and the Prime Minister from Love Actually wearing Jeffrey Dahmer’s glasses while doing a Jar Jar Binks’ impersonation.”
Is Hugh Grant the villain in Heretic?
Grant plays Mr. Reed, the host at the center of the missionaries’ dangerous predicament. A24 calls him diabolical in its synopsis, making the “horror villain” framing apt, but the premise does not require treating every detail of his character as settled before watching.

In an Associated Press interview, Grant described taking the part as a challenge: “I think human beings need challenges. It makes your beer taste better in the evening if you’ve climbed a mountain.” He also said, “I’m pretty sure doing the Jar Jar Binks impersonation was my idea.”
When did the Heretic trailer come out?
UPI reported the first trailer on June 25, 2024. Its indexed result supports the date, while the official trailer is linked from the AFI FEST archive. The 2024 film was written and directed by Beck and Woods and stars Grant, Thatcher, and East.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Heretic began streaming exclusively on Max in the United States on March 7, 2025, with an HBO linear broadcast announced for March 8. That is historical launch information, not confirmation that the film remains in Max’s catalog or is available there outside the United States. Grant has said of cinema-going, “These things should be collective experiences,” in an AP interview that also records his concerns about cinema closures and people watching alone at home.

Is Heretic available on Blu-ray?
A24 Shop lists both a standard HD Blu-ray and a 4K UHD Blu-ray edition. The standard disc is listed at 1080p; the 4K edition requires a compatible 4K Blu-ray player and is exclusive to A24 Shop.
