Jimmy Carter’s connection to Bob Dylan was more than a cultural talking point: Carter said Dylan’s songs helped shape his thinking about justice and social change. Hunter S. Thompson encountered that connection in Carter’s 1974 Law Day speech and later wrote about Carter. The story links music, political journalism, and a public reputation that changed over time—but each link rests on a different kind of evidence.
What did Bob Dylan have to do with Jimmy Carter?
Carter made the connection explicit in a May 4, 1974 address to alumni lawyers at the University of Georgia School of Law. Speaking about right and wrong in society, he identified Dylan as one source of his understanding. The Carter Library holds the full Law Day speech. An excerpt reproduced by Open Culture quotes Carter: “The other source of my understanding about what’s right and wrong in this society is from a friend of mine, a poet named Bob Dylan.”
That statement documents how Carter described his own intellectual influences. It does not, by itself, establish how much Dylan changed Carter’s policies or how widely Carter’s interpretation was shared by young voters.
Why did Hunter S. Thompson write about Carter?
Thompson’s connection to Carter grew out of the same 1974 speech. He encountered Carter in that setting and later recalled the address and their relationship in his political journalism. Thompson’s account gives a vivid view of Carter as Thompson saw him; it is personal recollection and reporting, not a neutral account of every event or of Carter’s presidency.

The distinction matters: Carter’s speech is a contemporaneous primary source for what he said about Dylan, while Thompson supplies a journalist’s perspective on Carter and the moment. Those sources illuminate a cultural connection, but they do not make Carter, Dylan, and Thompson members of a single political alliance.
What did Carter say about Dylan’s music?
In a 1976 interview with Playboy, Carter explained that his sons’ musical interests had influenced him. He said they were affected by Dylan in their views of civil rights, criminal justice, and the Vietnam War, and that he had observed Dylan’s impact on young people. Carter put it this way: “I was able to see the impact of Bob Dylan’s attitudes on young people.” The American Presidency Project transcript records Carter’s account.

Carter also described meeting Dylan at the Georgia governor’s mansion. They discussed music, changing times, young people’s emotions, and Israel. In the same interview, Carter addressed the range of his relationships: “I have different interests, different understandings of the world around me, different relationships with different kinds of people.” His point was that friendships across different backgrounds were not contradictory.
How did Carter’s public legacy change?
Jonathan Alter, discussing his Carter biography on PBS, described a shift in Carter’s image: he had once been associated with Thompson, Dylan, and the Allman Brothers and seen as culturally appealing, but had become unpopular by the time he left office. Alter then pointed to Carter’s post-presidential work as a source of renewed regard. This is a biographer’s account of changing reputation, not a poll series or a complete verdict on the administration. In the PBS transcript, Alter said, “People forget that, uh, Jimmy Carter at one point had been really cool.”

What Carter’s own retrospective can—and cannot—show
A Miller Center oral history recorded on November 29, 1982 gives Carter’s retrospective account of his presidency and decisions. It ranges across his transition to Washington, policy and staff management, relations with Congress and the Cabinet, Camp David, the Panama Canal treaties, SALT, and the Iran hostage crisis. The oral history transcript is useful evidence of Carter’s own perspective; it should be read alongside contemporaneous records and independent historical assessments rather than treated as a complete evaluation on its own.
