Hogan said a contractual payment deadline was missed; in a later account, Eric Bischoff described pandemic delays, an expired option and Hogan’s concerns about the script and his relationship with WWE. Those explanations come from Hogan and Bischoff, not public contract records.
What was the Chris Hemsworth Hulk Hogan movie?
Netflix announced the biopic in 2019, with Chris Hemsworth attached to play Hogan and Todd Phillips to direct. Scott Silver was associated with the screenplay. The planned story was to follow Hogan’s rise and continue through his 1990s turn as Hollywood Hogan and move from WWE to WCW, according to ComicBook.com’s 2024 report.
It remained a planned film, not a released movie. ComicBook.com also reported that Phillips had said earlier in 2024 that the project had essentially been scrapped; Sports Business Journal later reported that the Hemsworth film had been scrapped entirely by the time of Hogan’s death in July 2025.
Why did Hulk Hogan say the biopic stalled?
In comments from his PBD Podcast appearance, reported by ComicBook.com on November 5, 2024, Hogan said the contract “missed a beat” because a payment was not made at the right time. He put it this way: “There was a payment that wasn’t placed at the right time.” That is Hogan’s explanation of what happened, not independently verified payment history.

Hogan spoke positively about the writing process, saying he had “Spent about three years with this writer going back and forth.” He also described the script as very dark. In his account, the story would have reached his Hollywood Hogan heel turn, and a follow-up could have been possible if the movie succeeded.
What did Eric Bischoff say caused the project to end?
In October 2025, Eric Bischoff offered a broader explanation based on conversations he said he had with Hogan. As reported by Wrestling Inc., Bischoff said COVID delays put the project two years behind while Netflix’s two-year rights option kept running. He claimed Netflix missed a deadline to extend the agreement by 12 hours.

Bischoff also said Hogan ultimately chose not to pursue the film because the script presented some people and stories in ways that could offend them, potentially harming Hogan’s brand, and because Hogan wanted a long-term relationship with WWE. These are Bischoff’s accounts of the circumstances and Hogan’s thinking; the contract terms and timeline have not been independently established in the cited reporting.
Could a Hulk Hogan biopic still happen?
In April 2026, Hogan’s son Nick said a biopic remained possible, saying, “I definitely think there is potential for that.” He praised the idea of Hemsworth in the role but said a future film might instead be a different project, as reported by F4W/Wrestling Observer and Fightful. His comment indicates possibility, not a confirmed production, rights agreement or casting plan. The available reporting does not establish who currently controls the rights needed for a new biopic.

The Netflix documentary is a separate project
The abandoned Hemsworth film should not be confused with a separate Netflix multipart documentary about Hogan. Sports Business Journal reported on July 25, 2025, that Netflix had been developing the documentary with director Bryan Storkel, Connor Schell’s Words + Pictures, and WWE. That report said it included more than 20 hours of new interviews with Hogan recorded before his death, and had no release date at that time. The report does not establish the documentary’s current release or availability status.
