Song Sung Blue is a 2025 drama about Mike and Claire Sardina, a real Milwaukee couple who performed Neil Diamond songs as the tribute act Lightning & Thunder. Hugh Jackman plays Mike and Kate Hudson plays Claire; the film is not a Neil Diamond biopic. Written and directed by Craig Brewer, it adapts Greg Kohs’ 2008 documentary of the same name.
What is Song Sung Blue about?
The film follows Mike and Claire Sardina as they form a Neil Diamond tribute act and pursue success together. Focus Features describes the characters as two musicians who form a tribute band; that is the studio’s promotional synopsis, not a neutral critical assessment. The Los Angeles Times reported that the couple found unexpected success performing in mid-1990s Milwaukee.

The distinction matters: Jackman portrays Mike Sardina, an interpreter of Diamond’s songs, not Diamond himself. Hudson portrays Claire Sardina.
Who were Lightning & Thunder?
Lightning & Thunder was the performing name of Mike and Claire Sardina’s Neil Diamond tribute act. Their story is the real-life subject behind the feature. The Los Angeles Times also reported that the couple played with Pearl Jam at Eddie Vedder’s request.

How does the 2025 film relate to the documentary?
| 2025 feature | 2008 documentary |
|---|---|
| Song Sung Blue, a drama starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson | Song Sung Blue, a documentary made by Greg Kohs |
| Written and directed by Craig Brewer | Follows Mike and Claire Sardina and their life events |
| Dramatizes the couple’s story with actors | Documents the real couple |
The feature is based on Kohs’ documentary, not a film about the life of Neil Diamond. Because both works share a title, specifying “the 2025 feature” or “Kohs’ 2008 documentary” avoids confusion.
