He returned to SiriusXM on September 8, 2025, after a one-week delay, and SiriusXM renewed his contract for three more years that December. The episode does point to a changing audio landscape—but the available audience figures cannot establish that digital platforms caused talk shows to disappear.
What happened when Stern’s return was delayed?
Stern postponed his announced return from summer break by one week in early September 2025. The delay prompted speculation that his show might be ending. When he returned on September 8, he staged a departure tease involving Andy Cohen, who played the part of a possible successor. Stern did not announce that he was leaving. The Associated Press reported that Stern said SiriusXM and his team had been discussing the show’s future (Associated Press).
In December, SiriusXM announced a new three-year agreement. Stern told listeners he had worked out a way to have more free time while continuing on radio. The new deal’s financial terms were not disclosed in the Los Angeles Times report (Los Angeles Times). SiriusXM confirmed the renewal in its February 5, 2026 results release, describing it as securing three more years of exclusive interviews (Sirius XM Holdings).
Does the evidence show that talk shows are dying?
It shows competition and uncertainty, not the death of the format. A show renewed for three years has plainly not ended. More broadly, talk programming now competes with on-demand audio and video, podcasts, and social platforms for people’s time. That competition can change schedules, formats, distribution, and business models without proving that talk shows as a category have vanished.

The evidence also needs to be compared carefully. Subscriber totals, YouTube viewers, podcast reach, and radio listening are different measures; none can stand in for another. To support a claim of displacement, figures would need to cover comparable platforms and time periods, and ideally show whether a change in one audience caused a change in another. The cited reporting does not provide that evidence.
What do SiriusXM’s numbers say—and what don’t they say?
SiriusXM reported 33 million total subscribers at the end of 2025. Its self-pay subscribers declined by 301,000 over the full year, while self-pay net additions were about 110,000 in the fourth quarter. Those are company-wide figures, not measurements of Stern’s audience, and they do not establish that streaming or social media caused the annual decline (Sirius XM Holdings).

For digital viewing, The Guardian reported Tubular Labs data showing 4.5 million YouTube unique viewers for Stern in June 2024 and 3.1 million in June 2025. Those figures describe unique viewers on YouTube in the respective months—not total listeners to the radio show. On their own, they do not reveal why the number changed or how many people listened elsewhere (The Guardian).
The Guardian also reported that SiriusXM does not publish satellite listening figures for individual shows. That leaves no comparable public series in the cited sources for Stern’s total radio audience across time. The Los Angeles Times has described Stern’s historical peak as more than 20 million listeners and syndication in 60 markets, but the report does not specify a year or measurement method for those figures. They are historical career context, not a like-for-like comparison with recent YouTube viewers (Los Angeles Times).

How is SiriusXM responding to the competition?
The company’s strategy suggests adaptation rather than a simple replacement of one format by another. In its 2026 results release, SiriusXM said its podcast network ranked first in weekly listener reach, citing Edison Research’s Q2 2025 ranking. The company also described plans to integrate creators’ social and video inventory into cross-platform sales. These corporate statements show how SiriusXM is positioning its business across formats; they do not prove that podcasts or social video have displaced every form of talk radio (Sirius XM Holdings).
SiriusXM Media has likewise promoted podcasts as a mix of audio, video, social sharing, and live events, and argued that audiences are moving from scheduled television toward on-demand podcasts. Its Podsurvey User Study, Q1 2024, surveyed 4,688 podcast listeners aged 18 and older; the company reports that seven in 10 value authenticity from a favorite host. Its Q2 2023 Podcast User Study surveyed 2,642 people and reported that podcast listeners considered podcasts nine times more trustworthy than traditional TV. These are company-published marketing findings about podcast listeners and television comparisons—not independent evidence that Stern’s listeners migrated from his show or that talk shows have been killed (SiriusXM Media).

What can the Stern story reasonably tell us?
The delayed return became a news event partly because the show’s future was uncertain, and Stern used that uncertainty for a staged tease. The subsequent renewal settled the immediate question of whether he would continue on SiriusXM, but it did not settle how audiences are changing across radio, podcasting, video, and social platforms.
- Established: Stern returned after a one-week delay on September 8, 2025, and SiriusXM later renewed him for three years.
- Evidence of pressure: SiriusXM’s subscriber results and Stern’s reported YouTube-viewer figures provide specific signs worth watching, but each measures something different.
- Not established: The cited sources do not show a total-audience time series for Stern, a comparable historical-versus-current measure for talk shows as a whole, or causal proof that streaming and social media killed the genre.
The more defensible conclusion is that talk shows operate in a more crowded, cross-platform market. Their formats and distribution may evolve, and audience measurement can be fragmented, but Stern’s return and renewal are evidence against treating this episode as proof that talk shows are over.
