This timeline follows the real-world publication and screen adaptations of Hunter x Hunter—not the order of events inside Gon’s fictional journey. The manga began serialization in 1998, and it has been adapted into two distinct television anime productions: one identified by Nippon Animation as a 1999 production, and a later 2011 Madhouse series with 148 episodes, according to Nippon TV.

The dates below track publication and adaptation milestones. They do not provide a verified chapter-by-chapter chronology of the story.

What “complete” means for the anime and manga

The 2011 television adaptation is a completed screen adaptation: Nippon TV lists 148 episodes, and VIZ labels its seventh set the final set of its adaptation. Those facts describe the anime’s release and packaging, not the endpoint of the manga. Shueisha’s chapter and volume listings document manga material beyond the anime’s production history, so “the anime is complete” and “the manga is complete” are not interchangeable claims. Which version should you start with?

Choose based on whether you want to read the original manga or watch one of its two television adaptations. The official catalog records establish the versions and the 2011 series’ episode count, but do not settle a definitive reading or viewing order, a complete arc-to-chapter map, or a detailed comparison of fidelity, pacing, or quality.

  • For the original publication: start with manga volume 1, which Shueisha dates to June 4, 1998. VIZ presents English-language collected manga formats; check its catalog for the format and availability relevant to your region. Shueisha volume 1 catalog VIZ manga catalog
  • For the 1999 anime: Nippon Animation confirms a production from 1999, but the cited catalog does not provide its exact broadcast dates or a complete episode guide. Nippon Animation program catalog
  • For the 2011 anime: Nippon TV lists the Madhouse series at 148 episodes; VIZ calls its seventh box set the final set of its adaptation. Nippon TV overview VIZ anime box sets

If you finish the 2011 anime and want to move to the manga, the available official records here do not establish a definitive chapter handoff. Avoid treating an unsourced arc or chapter map as an official boundary; the manga’s chapter listings are a direct way to identify published material beyond the adaptation.

How the series’ popularity figures should be read

Nippon TV’s historical introduction describes cumulative circulation as “more than 63 million copies,” without an as-of date in the surfaced text. Separately, Nippon Broadcasting Group reports “more than 55 million copies in Japan (as of August 2011).” These are different historical statements with different scope and dating; neither should be presented as a current sales total or combined into one figure.
