How to Peg for Beginners: A Practical Guide to Comfort and Safety

Start with clear consent, a small anal-specific toy with a flared base or handle, and plenty of compatible lubricant. Go slowly, use barriers thoughtfully, and stop for pain.

Pegging is one form of anal penetration, so the key beginner principles are the same: agree on boundaries beforehand, use a small anal-specific toy with a flared base or handle, apply plenty of lubricant, and go slowly. Either partner can pause or stop at any time; pain is a reason to stop, not something to push through.

What to agree on before you begin

Talk when you are not in the middle of sex. Discuss what each of you wants to try, what is off-limits, and how you will check in. You can agree on a word or signal that means pause or stop, but either person can stop without needing to explain or negotiate. No one should be pressured into anal sex. Planned Parenthood’s anal sex safety guidance emphasizes going slowly and stopping if anything hurts or feels uncomfortable.

Choose a toy and lubricant that fit the activity

Use a toy designed for anal use

For a first try, consider a small, smooth toy made for anal use. It needs a wide flared base or a handle that stays outside the body; do not use an object that could slip in and be difficult to retrieve. Avoid large, ridged, or sharp-edged designs. Planned Parenthood explains anal toy design and hygiene; the available guidance does not establish a particular brand or material as best.

Use plenty of lubricant

The anus does not naturally lubricate. Put lubricant on the anal opening and the toy, and add more if you notice friction or discomfort. Water-based and silicone-based lubricants are compatible with latex condoms; oil-based products, including petroleum jelly and lotion, can weaken latex. If using a silicone toy, check its maker’s instructions before using silicone lubricant, since it can damage some silicone toys. Water-based lubricant is a broadly compatible option. See Planned Parenthood’s guidance on lubricant and condom compatibility.

How to proceed gradually

  1. Get ready without rushing. Have the toy, lubricant, and any barriers you plan to use within reach. Ordinary washing with mild soap and water is enough; douching is not required. Planned Parenthood cautions against frequent or harsh douching in its anal sex guidance.
  2. Begin slowly. Use plenty of lubricant and proceed at a pace the receiving partner is comfortable with. Check in during the activity rather than assuming silence means everything is fine.
  3. Pause or stop for discomfort. Do not try to endure pain or force penetration. Stop if either partner wants to stop, or if anything hurts or feels uncomfortable.
  4. Clean toys and change barriers as needed. Use a fresh condom when sharing a toy between partners, and clean the toy as directed. Before moving a toy from the anus to the vagina, wash it or change its condom.

Reduce infection and injury risks

Anal sex can transmit sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, hepatitis, HIV, HPV, and syphilis. Condoms and other barriers lower risk but do not eliminate it. Friction can cause small tissue tears, and shared toys can pass infections or bacteria if they are not cleaned and barriers are not changed appropriately. Planned Parenthood offers further advice on making sex safer.

Anal sex itself cannot cause pregnancy. Pregnancy may still be possible if semen or pre-ejaculate reaches the vulva or vagina, according to Planned Parenthood’s anal sex FAQ.

When pain or bleeding needs medical attention

Stop if you feel pain. Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist Michelle Inkster, MD, PhD, says, “Making sure you’re adequately lubricated is the main thing.” Cleveland Clinic advises stopping immediately and going to an emergency room if sharp, intense shooting pain continues rather than easing within 30 minutes; it also advises seeing a doctor for heavy bleeding or bleeding that lasts an hour or more after sex. These are warning signs that need medical assessment, not a diagnosis you should try to make yourself. Read the clinic’s anal sex safety guidance.
