Store CDs upright, one per case, in a cool, clean, stable place away from direct light, heat, moisture, and vibration. For most home collections, intact original jewel cases are suitable; careful handling and a stable room matter more than buying specialized storage.
Choose a case and store each disc upright
Keep each CD in its own rigid plastic jewel case. The case helps protect the disc from dust and prevents its playing surface from rubbing against other objects. The National Archives prefers polypropylene cases. The Library of Congress says original rigid plastic jewel cases do not need to be replaced.
If a case is broken or missing, choose a replacement that holds the disc securely by its center hub. Avoid stacking loose discs or placing several discs together where their surfaces can rub. Store cased CDs vertically, as you would books, rather than in a horizontal pile.
Find a stable place at home
The Library of Congress recommends a home environment that is cool—room temperature or below—relatively dry, clean, and stable. Its household guidance is about 35–40% relative humidity (RH). Keep the collection away from direct or intense light, radiators, heating or cooling vents, and sources of vibration.

Attics, basements, and garages are poor choices when their temperature and humidity fluctuate or they are vulnerable to leaks or flooding. A plastic bin may provide secondary protection from water, but it cannot correct excessive heat or dampness. A closed plastic container in a humid place can also increase mold risk.

Temperature and humidity targets are only part of the decision: a stable room with low exposure to heat, sunlight, leaks, and flooding is more useful than a storage bin placed in a risky location.

Handle discs without stressing or scratching them
- Hold a CD by its outer edge and center hole; avoid touching the playing surface.
- When removing or returning it to a case, use the hub and avoid bending or flexing the disc.
- If cleaning is necessary, use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth and wipe in straight lines from the center toward the outer edge. Do not wipe in circles; circular scratches can be more damaging.
- If you use distilled or deionized water, let the disc dry completely before putting it away.
Label the case rather than the disc when possible. The National Archives cautions against adding adhesive labels and against peeling off or repositioning labels already attached.
Organize a larger collection without compromising storage
For a large alphabetical run, shelving is a practical way to keep jewel cases upright and easy to find. A CD shelf or rack is an organization choice, not a preservation treatment: assess whether it holds cases vertically, fits the available footprint, and stands securely. The Library of Congress describes shelving as a practical preference but does not endorse a specific model.

Keep cases from leaning at a sharp angle or being compressed tightly enough to make removal difficult. Choose a location for the furniture using the same environmental principles as for individual cases: stable conditions, away from strong heat and direct light, and not in a leak- or flood-prone area.
What CD longevity studies can—and cannot—tell you
There is no single reliable lifespan for every music CD. The media and its manufacture, recording quality and compatibility, age when recorded, storage conditions, exposure to heat, humidity and light, labels, and handling can all affect how long it remains readable.

The Library of Congress summary of NIST accelerated-aging research, initiated in 2004, reports that all CD media tested had estimated life expectancies greater than 30 years under the model’s defined conditions of 25°C and 50% RH. This is a result for the tested recordable media and model conditions, not a promise for every prerecorded music CD.
Separate Library of Congress CD-ROM longevity research found a 4% overall failure rate in the first fifteen years of natural-aging data for its specific tested population, using that study’s error threshold. In an accelerated-aging test of that population, about 70% were estimated to exceed 100 years, while about 4% were estimated to reach end of life within ten years. The study also found that lower temperature and RH increased estimated media life; its reported comparison of 10°C / 35% RH with 25°C / 50% RH produced an eleven-fold increase. These are bounded study results, not an individualized forecast or a reason to refrigerate a household collection.

Preserve access to the music, not only the disc
Physical care and continued access are related but separate problems. A well-stored CD can outlast the computer drive, playback hardware, or software needed to use it. If a recording is important, consider maintaining a lawful digital copy and keeping it backed up separately from the discs; preserving the original and preserving convenient playback access address different risks.
