What does live-action Hiccup look like?
ComicBook.com reported on November 15, 2024 that Empire had published the first look at Mason Thames as Hiccup. The report describes him wearing Viking gear in a Berk dragon pit, with a crowd watching. That is the reported scene-setting; it does not establish details beyond the description.
DeBlois, who wrote and directed the remake, described the adaptation’s danger as “so dialled-up in terms of stakes — having a fully credible, photo-real dragon stomping around trying to kill him,” as quoted in the same report.
Who plays Hiccup, and what is the film about?
Mason Thames plays Hiccup, the son of Berk’s chief, Stoick. In Universal’s official synopsis, Vikings and dragons have fought for generations until Hiccup befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury. Their bond challenges the community’s belief that dragons are enemies.

DreamWorks describes the movie as a live-action reimagining of the franchise, which is connected to Cressida Cowell’s book series. That connection should not be confused with the film’s immediate source: it reimagines the earlier animated story rather than being established here as a direct adaptation of a particular book.
When was the first look released?
The image reveal was published on November 15, 2024. It was a pre-release preview, not a current announcement that the film was still upcoming. The remake subsequently reached theaters and home-video formats in 2025.
