Read Freida McFadden’s three numbered The Housemaid novels in this order: The Housemaid, The Housemaid’s Secret, then The Housemaid Is Watching. For the story’s chronological placement, add the optional short story The Housemaid’s Wedding between Books 2 and 3. It is not a fourth novel, and the author says it can also be read after Book 3.
Recommended reading order
- The Housemaid — Book 1, author-listed publication date April 26, 2022.
- The Housemaid’s Secret — Book 2, author-listed publication date February 20, 2023.
- The Housemaid’s Wedding — optional short story, best placed here for chronological order; author-listed publication date November 4, 2024.

Where does The Housemaid’s Wedding fit?
The Housemaid’s Wedding is a winter-themed bonus-scene short story, not a numbered novel. McFadden describes it as filling the gap between The Housemaid’s Secret and The Housemaid Is Watching. Read it after Book 2 if you want the events in chronological order; if you have already finished Book 3, the author says it is also fine to read the story afterward. See the author’s official page for The Housemaid’s Wedding.
Do you have to read the novels in order?
No. McFadden says the novels do not have to be read in order, but reading them sequentially offers a better experience because later books may spoil earlier ones. Her official FAQ recommends following the series order for that reason.
