You can start with X-Men (2024) #1 for Cyclops’s team, or Exceptional X-Men (2024) #1 for Kate Pryde and a group of young mutants. Marvel’s From the Ashes era follows the fall of Krakoa, but its launch was presented as a fresh start for new and longtime readers—not as a demand to read every preceding X-Men comic.

Choose the starting point that suits you

Marvel launched From the Ashes as a new era of team books and solo series after Krakoa. The two first issues below offer different ways in; you do not need to read one before the other to begin.

Start here What it introduces First issue details
X-Men (2024) #1 Cyclops leads a team based in Alaska in the aftermath of Krakoa and ORCHIS. Published July 10, 2024; written by Jed MacKay, pencilled by Ryan Stegman; rated T+. Marvel’s issue page.
Exceptional X-Men (2024) #1 Kate Pryde steps into leadership of young mutants after Krakoa’s fall. Published September 4, 2024; written by Eve Ewing, pencilled by Carmen Carnero; rated T+. Marvel’s issue page.

What you need to know about Krakoa

From the Ashes takes place after Krakoa’s fall and the defeat of ORCHIS, as Marvel’s launch announcement explains. That gives the new stories their starting context, but the launch information does not establish that you must finish the Krakoa-era comics first. If you are curious about that earlier period, you can explore it separately rather than treating it as an entrance exam.

A simple reading path

  1. Pick one launch issue. Choose X-Men (2024) #1 for Cyclops’s team, or Exceptional X-Men (2024) #1 for Kate Pryde and the young mutants.
  2. Continue that series in issue order. Following one title is a manageable way to get started; Marvel describes the era as a slate of team books and solo series, not one mandatory sequence.
  3. Use event-specific lists for crossovers. When a story is explicitly presented as a crossover, check its official order if you want every chapter.

How to handle crossovers

Some plots cross between titles. For example, Marvel’s X-Manhunt reading list orders these issues: Uncanny X-Men (2024) #11, NYX (2024) #9, Storm (2024) #6, X-Men (2024) #13, X-Factor (2024) #8, Exceptional X-Men (2024) #7, X-Force (2024) #9, then X-Manhunt Omega (2025) #1. This is the sequence for that event, not a complete reading order for the entire From the Ashes era.

Do you need to read every new X-Men title?

No. Start with the series whose premise interests you, then add another if you want a wider view of the era. Marvel’s launch announcement describes the line as multiple team books and solo series and frames it as a fresh start for newcomers as well as longtime fans. The available launch details do not promise that every later plot will be fully independent, so use an event’s own reading list when you want to follow a crossover across books.
