A chic messy bun is relaxed in its texture but deliberate in its shape: choose a flattering placement, make a stable base, and leave only a little looseness. You do not need to slick every strand back. A hair tie and a few pins are the essentials; texture spray and hairspray are optional.
What makes a messy bun look polished?
The difference between intentional and accidental is control. Keep the bun secure and its placement deliberate, then loosen only the parts you want to look undone. Smooth the base or hairline if you like a neater finish, while allowing the bun itself to stay soft and textured.
Placement and parting change the mood. Hairstylist Luke Hersheson says, “The parting completely changes the character of the style,” in Who What Wear’s slicked-back-bun tutorial. A low bun can look classic, while a higher one may feel more lifted or sporty; a center part can read softer, a side part more directional, and no defined part more editorial. These are styling impressions, not fixed rules.
What you need
- A hair tie that holds comfortably; a spiral tie is one option.
- Bobby pins or hair pins to secure the bun and tuck loose ends.
- Optional: texturizing spray for slippery hair, or a light mist of hairspray if you want extra hold.
These tools and optional finishing products are recommended in tutorials from Hair.com, TRESemmé and Davines; they are not requirements, and the tutorials do not establish that any particular product works for everyone.

How to make a messy bun
- Start with your hair’s natural texture. Work on dry hair. Second-day hair may have more grip, but freshly washed hair can work too. If it feels very slippery, you can add a little texturizing spray.
- Choose the part and placement. Decide whether you want a center part, side part or no defined part, then choose where the bun will sit. A low placement often feels more classic; a higher one can feel more casual or sporty.
- Gather your hair into a ponytail. Bring it to the chosen height and secure it with a comfortable hair tie. Smooth the base only as much as you want; you do not have to flatten every strand.
- Wrap the ponytail loosely. Twist or wrap it around the tie to form a bun. Keep the shape relaxed rather than pulling each section tight.
- Pin and tuck. Use pins to hold the bun and tuck in ends that stick out where you do not want them. Add pins if the bun feels unstable or your hair’s thickness needs more support.
- Adjust the looseness. Gently ease the bun outward for a softer shape, then draw out a few face-framing or textured pieces if you want them. Leave the rest in place so the style still looks considered.
- Finish only if needed. A light mist of hairspray can add hold. Use a small amount and adjust to your hair’s texture and density.
This is a practical synthesis of instructional advice from Hair.com, TRESemmé, Davines and L’Oréal Paris. Their tutorials offer styling guidance rather than controlled comparisons.
Adjust the technique to your hair
Fine or thin hair
If your hair is too smooth to stay in place, a little texturizing or volumizing product may give it more grip. Use it sparingly: heavy product can weigh fine hair down. Davines discusses texture support for fine or thin hair in its messy-bun tutorial.

Thick hair
Thick hair may need more pins to keep the bun stable. If smoothing the base is difficult, work in sections rather than trying to control all the hair at once. There is no universal pin count; add support where the bun needs it.
Curly or coily hair
Let your natural texture contribute to the shape. Smooth only the areas where you want a sleeker finish; a messy bun does not require flattening every curl. Hair.com’s stylist-informed guide to slicked-back buns discusses smoothing techniques, but that finish is optional for this look.

Freshly washed or slippery hair
Second-day hair is sometimes recommended for extra grip, but it is not a prerequisite. If your hair slips out of the tie or pins, try a small amount of texturizing spray before gathering it.
How to keep it relaxed without making it look unfinished
- Keep the base secure before loosening the bun; otherwise, the shape can come apart.
- Choose a clear placement and part instead of changing them as you work.
- Loosen the bun in small adjustments, not by pulling out every section.
- Use pins to control ends that distract from the shape, while leaving a few intentional pieces loose.
- Decide where you want polish: for example, smooth the hairline but keep texture in the bun.
Messy bun versus slicked-back bun
Both styles can look deliberate; they differ in finish and tension. The tutorials describe techniques and aesthetics, not evidence that one style is objectively chicer or healthier.
