In Uderolal, a town in Pakistan’s Sindh province, Chaiti Chand is celebrated as both the birthday of Jhulay Lal and the Sindhi Hindu New Year. A 2017 account by anthropologist Zahida Rehman Jatt describes an evening mela whose rituals move from lighting a sacred lamp and praying at a well to floating an offering and dancing.
Where the celebration takes place
Uderolal is about 30 km from Hyderabad, according to Jatt’s report published on 7 March 2017. The report identifies the town as the main centre of the Daryapanthis, a river-centered devotional community. Its account documents the observance as it was described in 2017; it does not establish current event dates, access arrangements, attendance, or whether every custom remains unchanged.
Jatt places the celebration within local traditions connected to the Indus. In her account, the river figure is known among Hindu devotees by names including Uderolal, Amar Lal, Uday Chand, and Jhulay Lal, while Muslim devotees are described as using names such as Khawaja Khizar, Zinda Pir, and Sheikh Tahir. These names and traditions should be understood in the local context described by the report, not generalized to all Hindus or Muslims in Sindh.
How the evening mela unfolds
Lighting the lamp and praying at the well
The mela begins with jyot jagayan, the lighting of a sacred lamp. Shortly before sunset, devotees gather for pooja at the sacred well of Balanpaho Sahib. Jatt reports that devotees believe the well’s water has healing properties. After prayer, participants perform chhando, sprinkling water on their faces, an act understood in the account as spiritually enlightening.

Floating the behrano
A central ritual is behrano parwan karan, or floating the behrano. Jatt describes it as a large brass plate decorated with flour, sweets, dried fruits, lamps, and rose petals, offered to the water. Daryapanthis, the report says, believe fish and other aquatic life consume the offering and bestow blessings on devotees.
The account says the behrano was traditionally floated into the Indus, but that the practice described had shifted to any water body or canal. Devotees reportedly came to Uderolal carrying behrano from Mirpurkhas, Shahdadapur, Sanghar, Nawabshah, Sakrand, and other cities.

Making a personal prayer
Another observance is pallao payan. Devotees hold the hems of their shirts or dupattas and pray to Uderolal for help with personal problems and worldly ordeals.
Ending with chhej and a chant
The mela concludes with chhej, a dance performed by men wielding dandia. Jatt describes the dancers’ swaying as reminiscent of the Indus’s waves, with the rhythm rising from slow to rapid. Her report records participants chanting:

Historical context in the 2017 account
Jatt wrote that, at the time of her report, many Hindus in Sindh had migrated to India, while Chaiti Chand continued to be celebrated with religious fervour and community spirit. She also describes singer Ram Panjwani’s post-Partition role in promoting Uderolal as a patron, or Ishtdev, figure for Sindhi Hindus in India. These are historical framing claims made in the 2017 article, rather than a measure of present-day practice.
