How the House of Mirrors Works in The Lady from Shanghai, John Wick: Chapter 2 and Agent Vinod (1977)

In The Lady from Shanghai, John Wick: Chapter 2 and Agent Vinod (1977), mirror mazes make sight unreliable—but each film uses that confusion differently.

A house of mirrors makes seeing unreliable: a person can seem to multiply, vanish, or stand somewhere they are not. The Lady from Shanghai turns that uncertainty into a deadly revelation; John Wick: Chapter 2 makes it a tactical problem for fighters and camera alike; and Agent Vinod (1977) uses reflections to frustrate a hero trying to hit his target.

Why the mirror maze changes the scene

In an ordinary gunfight or chase, a clear line of sight helps characters—and viewers—understand where everyone is. Mirrors break that agreement. They multiply bodies, obscure the difference between a person and an image, and make a seemingly open space difficult to read. The three films share this visual device, but give it different dramatic jobs: deception in Welles’s film, concealment in John Wick: Chapter 2, and failed targeting in Agent Vinod.

The Lady from Shanghai: reflections turn recognition into danger

Orson Welles’s 1947 film brings Michael O’Hara, Elsa Bannister, and Arthur Bannister into a mirror maze for its climax. The characters confront one another among repeated images, so neither the characters’ sight nor the audience’s can be trusted. As Bannister fires, the difference between a person and a reflection becomes decisive.

Scroll.in reads Elsa’s stretched reflections as suggesting divided loyalties, while Bannister’s images seem to merge with hers. That is a critical interpretation of the scene, not a documented statement of Welles’s intent. The maze’s effect is more immediate: it turns the question of who is where into a matter of life and death.

A purpose-built set, not just a hall of mirrors

The mirror maze was a separate set from the film’s larger funhouse sequence. Turner Classic Movies (TCM) reports that Welles wanted to draw on the expressionist imagery of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The funhouse included sliding doors, distortion mirrors, and a long slide; special-effects expert Lawrence Butler designed the separate mirror-maze set.

An archival account published by the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), reproducing a 1948 American Cinematographer article, gives the maze’s scale: 2,912 square feet of reflecting surface, made with eighty plate-glass mirrors measuring 7 by 4 feet each, and 24 distortion mirrors of similar dimensions. Several straight mirrors were transparent two-way glass, allowing camera operators to film from the non-reflecting side. TCM also reports that some shots were made through holes drilled in the glass, helping keep the camera out of the maze’s reflections.

TCM says the larger funhouse sequence was reduced to a few minutes, while the hall-of-mirrors climax remained virtually untouched apart from music added at the end. The production’s broader history was more heavily altered: Yale University Library records principal photography from October 1946 to February 1947, editing completed by March 1947, and the film’s opening in June 1948 after studio-ordered filming and re-editing. Yale notes that Welles’s rough cut was reduced from 155 minutes to 87.

John Wick: Chapter 2: reflections become a tactical obstacle

The 2017 film shifts the maze from a funhouse into a contemporary art setting. In Scroll.in’s description, the sequence takes place in a floor-to-ceiling installation called “Reflections of the soul,” with neon blue and orange light. John Wick pursues and is pursued by suited shooters and Ruby Rose’s mute assassin. The maze makes fighters appear and disappear, while its scale and style suit the film’s stylized action.

SUPREMETECH See-Through Two-Way Mirror (18x24 Inch, 0.16 Inch Thick Tempered Glass)
  • This mirror is made from tempered glass. Tempered glass is stronger and safer than regular glass. It is not as shatter resistant as acrylic, though, so you will need to take care not to drop it.
  • Glass is much more resilient than acrylic to scratches and other forms of abrasions, however, it still can be scratched so take care not to rub it with anything particularly abrasive.
  • 2nd photo monitor off. 3rd photo monitor on, bright room. 4th photo monitor on, dark room. 5th photo reflection of ceiling light. 6th photo ceiling light seen through mirror. 7th photo demonstrates nature of two way mirror.
  • One side is more reflective than the other. You'll want to face the reflective side towards where you want to see a reflection. You can tell which side has the reflective material by putting a small object like a pen cap against the mirror and seeing which side has a smaller gap between the reflection and the object. The side with the smaller gap is the side with the reflective material. Please see FAQ in description area below for more useful info.

Director Chad Stahelski described the room as one of the film’s hardest creative problems. Design, cinematography, stunt planning, and reflections had to work together, and the camera crew had to stay out of the mirrored images. “Creatively, the mirror room was probably the most difficult,” he told /Film in 2017. He also said, “I can’t shoot this like I normally would.” The team rehearsed with mirrors and found some solutions by accident.

That production challenge is part of what makes the sequence feel different from Welles’s finale. The reflections are not only a source of visual uncertainty; they have to conceal threats without making the choreography unreadable. Keanu Reeves described the room as Stahelski’s homage to Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon, calling it a maze where fighters can appear and disappear. That is Reeves’s account of the director’s intention, not proof that the scene directly inherits every feature of earlier mirror-maze sequences.

Agent Vinod (1977): the target multiplies

This is Deepak Bahry’s 1977 Hindi spy film starring Mahendra Sandhu as Vinod—not the separately titled 2012 film. In the climax described by Scroll.in, Vinod tries to shoot the villain Chacha, but the reflections in the villain’s lair frustrate his aim. Chacha taunts him: “Wherever you go, you will find my image.”

Vinod breaks mirrors and appears to be shot, before the scene complicates that apparent outcome. Here, the maze’s central effect is a failed line of sight: the hero cannot reliably identify or target the villain. The sequence uses the reflections to delay certainty and reverse expectations, rather than to stage the same kind of extended pursuit as John Wick: Chapter 2.

  • Acrylic Material: acrylic see through mirror is made of acrylic material; Unlike traditional glass mirrors, it has a certain toughness and shatter resistance and can be slightly bent; Please do not treat the 2 way mirror rudely, Rough use may still cause scratches
  • Instructions: please tear off the protective film on both sides before use; The side with the blue protective film is the side with the metal coating; We recommend that you install the side with the blue protective film facing the inside of your DIY work, so that it is less likely to wear the coating; If the coating is broken, the special reflection effect will be invalid; The protective film may be scratched, but the infinity mirror is generally safe and scratch free
  • Maintenance: for cleaning and care, we recommend that you use a dust free cloth or dust free glasses cloth to wipe two way mirror gently; If conditions permit, you can also use a dust free cloth with a little of diluted soapy water to wipe; We recommend that you try to avoid wiping the side with the metal coating too much

The available account of this scene does not provide comparable production details or establish how the mirrors were filmed. It also does not establish that the filmmakers consciously copied Welles. The connection among the films is therefore strongest as a comparison of what the mirror maze does on screen, not as a claim of direct influence.

Three uses of the same visual trick

Film What reflections disrupt What the maze does dramatically
The Lady from Shanghai (1947) Recognition: characters and images become difficult to distinguish. Turns deception and mistaken sight into a deadly confrontation.
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) Spatial awareness: fighters can appear, disappear, or be concealed by reflections. Creates an action space where pursuit and choreography must remain legible despite visual confusion.
Agent Vinod (1977) Targeting: Vinod cannot reliably aim at Chacha among the images. Obstructs the hero’s shots and helps delay certainty about the outcome.

These are different dramatic uses of one basic problem: an image looks like evidence, but cannot be trusted as proof of where a person is. Welles makes that gap fatal, Stahelski’s action scene makes it tactical, and Bahry’s climax makes it an obstacle to the hero’s aim.
