Lee Falk created The Phantom for King Features Syndicate in 1936, after the success of his earlier strip Mandrake the Magician. The daily comic debuted on February 17, with Falk writing and Ray Moore drawing. The hero’s fictional origin begins three centuries earlier, in 1536—a different timeline from the strip’s creation.

Why Lee Falk created The Phantom

After Mandrake the Magician became successful, King Features invited Falk to develop another comic strip. Falk first proposed a feature about King Arthur, but the syndicate rejected the idea. He then created The Phantom. King Features’ biography identifies the Mandrake success and rejected proposal as part of the strip’s creation story: King Features’ account of The Phantom’s 80th anniversary.

King Features describes the new strip’s ingredients as themes drawn from epic poetry, fairy tales, and stories of chivalry. That gives the hero a deliberately legendary frame; the available account does not establish a longer, definitive list of Falk’s inspirations.

When the comic strip began

The daily Phantom strip launched on February 17, 1936, written by Falk and drawn by Ray Moore. The Sunday narrative followed on May 28, 1939. King Features records both dates in its anniversary account and official strip history.

King Features called The Phantom “the first comic featuring a masked superhero” in its 2016 anniversary release. That is the syndicate’s characterization of the strip’s place in comics history, rather than an independently established priority claim.

How the fictional legend works

The character’s backstory is built around inheritance. In King Features’ account, the first Phantom, Christopher Walker, begins the legend in 1536 and vows that his descendants will carry on his mission. Each successor takes up the same identity, so the Phantom appears to be one undying figure across generations. The nickname “The Ghost Who Walks” comes from that belief in his immortality.

That 1536 date belongs to the story, not to the comic’s publication history: Falk created the strip in 1936. King Features outlines the fictional origin on The Phantom’s official story page.

What the record says about the strip’s reach

In a February 17, 2016 release, King Features said The Phantom appeared in more than 500 newspapers in approximately 40 countries. Those figures describe the syndicate’s claim at the time of its 80th-anniversary announcement; they should not be read as current circulation numbers.
