His teacher Béla Wilda introduced him to Bach; later, Piazzolla brought techniques associated with fugue and counterpoint into a music still rooted in tango. That is the “touch of Bach”: not simply Bach melodies pasted into tango, but one influence within Piazzolla’s distinctive blend of tango, jazz and classical music.
How Piazzolla first encountered Bach
In its biomusical chronology, the Piazzolla Foundation places the lessons with pianist Béla Wilda in 1933, when Piazzolla was a child living in New York. Wilda introduced him to historical composers, including Bach. Piazzolla later recalled: “With Wilda I learned to love Bach.”
Bach was part of a broader early musical mix, not an isolated discovery. The Foundation’s chronology describes Piazzolla’s preferences as a triad: Bach, the jazz atmosphere of New York, and the tango of Elvino Vardaro’s Sextet. Each offered a different kind of musical possibility.
What Bach has to do with tango
The clearest connection is compositional technique. Bach is closely associated with counterpoint—the weaving together of independent musical lines—and with fugue, a form in which a musical idea enters in one voice and is taken up and developed by others. These techniques can create momentum and complexity without taking a piece away from its underlying style.

IRCAM’s research description examines fugue procedures in Piazzolla’s Muerte del ángel, placing the piece where popular tango meets Baroque procedures, jazz practices and modern classical writing. That makes the work a concrete example of how a Bach-associated way of organizing musical material could interact with tango. It does not mean that every Piazzolla tango is a fugue, or that the piece simply quotes a Bach tune.
Bach was one strand in Piazzolla’s musical language
The Biblioteca Nacional Mariano Moreno names Bach alongside Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky among Piazzolla’s influences, and describes his tango as incorporating jazz and classical elements. The combination matters: Piazzolla’s music did not leave tango behind in order to become classical. It used elements from other traditions to extend what tango could express.

His direction also developed over time. Argentina’s Secretariat of Culture says that Piazzolla went to Paris in 1954 to study composition with Nadia Boulanger. She encouraged him to deepen his musical identity through tango. The resulting nuevo tango joined tradition with modernity rather than treating them as opposites.

Muerte del ángel is a useful starting point if you want to hear how fugue procedures can meet tango; IRCAM’s analysis focuses on that work. Listen for musical lines that seem to answer or build on one another, rather than expecting a straightforward Bach quotation.

For a score-based exploration, Libertango is among Piazzolla’s recognized works listed by the Biblioteca Nacional Mariano Moreno, which reports holding about one hundred of his scores. A score can help reveal how parts interact, but the title alone does not establish a direct Bach quotation. Editions of a work can differ in instrumentation and arrangement, so check that a score matches the version you want to follow or play.
