The modern book grew out of a gradual change in format, not a single invention: ancient scrolls remained in use as bound-leaf codices spread through the Roman world, became the usual way to preserve texts by the fourth century CE, and continued as handwritten books through the Middle Ages. Printing later transformed how many books could be made, while initially preserving the manuscript page’s familiar appearance.
How scrolls worked
Scrolls were a major ancient book form by the mid-third millennium BCE, according to Princeton University Library. A roll could be made by fastening lengths of papyrus or other materials together. Readers unrolled it to reach the text, which was commonly arranged in columns. Many rolls were written on one side, though two-sided examples existed; not every scroll was papyrus, or built and read in precisely the same way. Harvard’s account describes rolls made from papyrus, leather, parchment, or paper.
The roll was useful for more than continuous reading. Its length could be extended by adding material, making it suited to records that grew over time. Scrolls also remained useful for prayers, ceremonies, maps, genealogies, and other purposes. They did not vanish when codices became common.
What changed with the codex
A codex is made from sheets folded into leaves and gathered—sometimes in groups called quires—then bound along one edge. It could be made from papyrus or parchment. Since a leaf has two sides, both could be written on; a cover could protect the pages. Instead of unrolling a long roll to find a passage, readers could open the book closer to the section they wanted. Princeton’s account highlights this easier access and the ability to write on both sides.

When the codex spread—and why the shift took time
The dates mark different stages, rather than competing claims for one exact moment. University College London places the codex’s introduction in Egypt under Roman rule after 30 BCE and cites a first-century CE Latin codex fragment as the oldest known in its account. The University of Michigan Library says the format was not widely used in the ancient world until around the second century CE. Harvard says the codex had become the most usual way to preserve a text by the fourth century CE.
Christian texts are part of this story: Princeton and Harvard connect the spread of Christianity with codex adoption, and Princeton notes the format became preferred for early Christian texts in part because passages were easier to consult. That association is not a complete explanation of the wider change. The University of Michigan Library says the reasons for the transition remain uncertain. Scrolls also persisted for particular uses after codices gained ground.

From papyrus and parchment to the medieval manuscript
The change in book form did not mean an immediate change in writing material. Early codices could be made of papyrus, while parchment gained ground over subsequent centuries. University College London notes that parchment codices could become substantially larger in page capacity during the fourth and fifth centuries. Paper would enter the longer history of book materials later; the shift from roll to codex and the shift in materials were related developments, but not one event.
In medieval Europe, codices were commonly copied by hand. Each new copy required scribal labor, and copying could introduce variations from one manuscript to another. The bound-leaf form that had spread in antiquity thus remained the framework for books long before printing changed their production.

What printing changed—and what it kept
The Gutenberg Bible, printed in Mainz and probably completed late in 1455, is identified by the Library of Congress as the first great book printed in Western Europe from movable metal type. Its pages largely used two columns and forty-two lines. Capitals and headings were ornamented by hand, showing how mechanical reproduction could be combined with skilled finishing.
Gutenberg did not invent printing worldwide: movable-type printing had existed elsewhere. The University of Washington’s account describes the European method’s importance in expanding production scale. Early European printed books imitated manuscript page design; later printers moved toward more consistent Roman type. As Geoffrey Turnovsky, a professor of French at the University of Washington, puts it: “New technologies are always hybrid — they always build out of old technologies — so in a way, you can never quite get to the beginning of the story.”
