Social media has not been shown to shorten everyone’s attention span in a uniform, lasting way. Studies link some patterns—especially problematic use and media multitasking—with inattention or distraction, but most studies cannot show that social media caused those difficulties. The answer also depends on what studies mean by “attention”: a person’s reported distractibility, symptoms of inattention, or performance on a specific task are not interchangeable measures.
What studies say about social media and attention
Reviews find associations between some forms of social-media use and attention-related difficulties, not proof that ordinary use permanently reduces a person’s ability to concentrate. Results vary across studies because they examine different kinds of use, different populations, and different attention outcomes.
A 2026 systematic review by Fabio and Picciotto examined 25 studies of social-media use and ADHD-related traits or symptoms in adolescents aged 10–19. Most included studies reported a positive association between social-media use and inattention outcomes. The association was more consistent for problematic use than for general or time-based measures. The authors note that “the predominance of cross-sectional designs limits conclusions about directionality.” In other words, the studies generally cannot establish whether social-media use contributes to inattention, whether people with attention difficulties use social media in different ways, or whether other factors influence both. Read the review by Fabio and Picciotto.
This finding concerns associations with ADHD-related traits or symptoms in adolescents. It does not show that social media causes ADHD or permanent attention loss.

Which patterns of use are most often linked with attention difficulties?
Problematic use, not simply time spent
Studies distinguish between general measures such as time spent or frequency of use and measures of problematic use, which assess symptoms associated with difficulty controlling use. In the adolescent review, problematic-use measures were more consistently linked with ADHD-related symptoms than broad or time-based measures. That does not establish a causal effect, but it suggests that how a person uses social media may matter more than time alone.
A review of 233 papers found substantial variation in how social-media use is measured: some studies track duration, frequency, or activities, while others use scales focused on problematic or addictive patterns. Because these measures address different questions, their results should not be treated as directly comparable. See the review of social-media-use measures.

Multitasking and distraction
A systematic review of 23 studies of children, adolescents, and young adults, covering research published from January 2009 through November 2024, reported mixed cognitive findings. It described associations involving media multitasking and attention problems, social-media distraction, and the use of multiple platforms alongside selective-attention outcomes. These findings do not mean every platform or user experiences the same effect. The review also noted a shortage of well-designed randomized trials and called for more research on long-term effects. Read the review of youth media use and cognitive outcomes.
What “attention span” means in these studies
“Attention span” is a broad everyday phrase, not one consistent research measure. Studies may assess self-reported inattention, reported distraction, selective or sustained attention, or performance on a particular cognitive task. An association with one outcome does not establish that someone’s general ability to focus has changed.

This distinction matters when interpreting claims about social media. A person reporting more distraction is not the same as a measured change on an attention task, and neither alone demonstrates a lasting change in everyday concentration.
How to interpret findings about disordered screen use
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis by Moshel and colleagues reported Hedges’ g = .50 for attention and focus in groups with disordered screen-use behaviors compared with controls. The review included disordered use more broadly, including internet, gaming, and social-media behaviors. This pooled result is not an estimate of the effect of ordinary social-media use on the general population, and it should not be presented as proof that social media is shrinking society’s attention span. What remains uncertain
The reviews do not resolve whether attention effects differ reliably by platform, content format, or adult age group. They also do not establish whether reducing social-media use reverses any measured attention outcome. Stronger longitudinal and experimental studies, consistent ways of measuring exposure, and clearly defined attention outcomes are needed to clarify direction and long-term effects.
