Spoilers for both the novel and Netflix series: Netflix’s Sacred Games keeps the central pursuit linking Mumbai police officer Sartaj Singh and gangster Ganesh Gaitonde, but it reshapes Vikram Chandra’s much broader novel for television. The book spends more time on intersecting lives, histories and inner conflicts; the series selects, compresses and sometimes changes those stories. The result is an adaptation of the same world, not a scene-by-scene transfer.
What carries over—and what changes?
Netflix announced the series in 2016 as an adaptation of Chandra’s novel, setting its interwoven story of crime, corruption, politics and espionage in Mumbai (Netflix’s announcement). The recognizable core is Sartaj’s pursuit of Gaitonde and the connection between the two men. Around that core, however, the book and series distribute attention differently and do not make all the same choices about characters or outcomes.
That distinction matters when asking whether the show is “faithful.” It remains tied to the novel’s central conflict, but fidelity varies by element: broad premise and major characters persist, while the scope, character relationships and some plot events are altered.
Why the novel feels broader
Chandra’s official book page describes a web of intersecting lives around Sartaj and Gaitonde, with extended histories and strands involving film ambition, political violence, poverty, intelligence work and religious power. The novel’s attention is not limited to the central chase; it builds context through the different people and forces surrounding it.

Television has to select and arrange that material across episodes. The Quint’s 2018 comparison describes the novel as more than 900 pages and notes that the adaptation omits and adds characters and alters narratives (The Quint’s comparison). That page count is the publication’s approximate description, not a figure that applies uniformly to every edition. The series also runs across more than one season, so the adaptation should not be reduced to a single season’s plot.
How the leads are characterized
Sartaj Singh
The Quint reads the novel’s Sartaj as morally compromised, rather than a straightforwardly heroic investigator. In the review’s interpretation, the screen version makes him more conventionally heroic. This is a critical judgment about emphasis, not an objective measurement: the useful comparison is that the book gives readers more room inside Sartaj’s contradictions, while television makes choices about which traits to foreground.
Ganesh Gaitonde
The Quint describes novel-Gaitonde as brutal but also strategically minded and philosophically reflective, and argues that the show simplifies that combination. Its broader reading is that Sartaj and Gaitonde are more alike in the novel, with ambition helping to separate their paths. That is the reviewer’s interpretation; it is not presented as a definitive statement of authorial intent.
Specific plot changes confirmed by the head writer
Head writer Varun Grover discussed several differences in a 2019 interview with Gadgets 360 (Gadgets 360’s interview with Grover).

The series instead makes the film about Gaitonde himself, creating a self-referential thread that can revisit his image and history.
- Anjali Mathur: Grover said Anjali is not killed in the novel, but the series kills her. He described the choice as debated among the creative team and said he disagreed with it; it was one creative decision, not an inevitable consequence of adapting the book.
- Parulkar: Both versions take Parulkar to suicide, but Grover said the reason differs. The Quint also highlights a difference in how his relationship with Sartaj functions: in its reading, the novel gives him an ambitious-officer role as well as a surrogate-father dynamic.
Are the two versions telling the same story?
They share a central conflict and a fictional world, but the show is selective and interpretive rather than a complete reproduction of the novel. Chandra’s official synopsis conveys the book’s many connected lives; the specific changes Grover confirmed show how the series also revises individual turns to serve its own structure. The Quint’s claim that the adaptation simplifies the leads is a reviewer’s assessment, while the altered film, Anjali’s fate and Parulkar’s changed rationale are specific differences reported by the head writer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you read the novel after watching?
Read it if you want the fuller network of backstories and intersecting lives, or if you want to see how the characters and plot decisions work in the source version. The series gives you a more selected route through that world; the novel offers more narrative breadth and interior development. Neither source establishes an objective quality ranking, so the choice is whether you want the television version’s focused adaptation or Chandra’s more expansive novel.
Rank #4
Chandra’s response to the adaptation was positive at the announcement stage: he said he was confident the fictional world he had lived with would come alive on Netflix’s large-scale canvas. That statement expresses his confidence in the project, not blanket approval of every change made for the series.
