The key difference is format: Mission Over Mars is an eight-episode series built around four fictionalized women scientists, while Mission Mangal is a feature film with a compressed, ensemble launch-team story. Neither should be treated as a documentary or an exact account of named real scientists.
Are Mission Over Mars and Mission Mangal the same story?
No. They share the Mars Orbiter Mission as their broad subject, but they are separate productions with different characters, casts, and narrative structures. ZEE5 describes Mission Over Mars as a fictional adaptation; its scientists work for the fictional Indian Space Agency, or ISA. The producer of Mission Mangal, Hope Productions, says that film was “Fictionalised for cinematic purposes.”

That distinction matters: the titles dramatize a real space programme, but their character names and dramatic scenarios are not a substitute for the historical record.
How do their formats and dramatic focuses compare?
| Feature | Mission Over Mars | Mission Mangal |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Eight-episode drama series, listed by ZEE5. | 2019 feature film, described by Hope Productions. |
| Story focus | Four women scientists and the personal and institutional pressures around their work. | An ensemble account led by Rakesh Dhawan and Tara as they pursue a Mars plan after a failed GSLV launch. |
| Dramatic structure | Episode summaries span limited budgets, launch setbacks, family responsibilities, procedural concerns, and approval decisions. | A more compressed, star-led feature narrative organized around the launch-team story. |
| Historical framing | ZEE5’s cast announcement calls it a fictional adaptation and identifies the characters as ISA scientists. | Hope Productions explicitly labels the film fictionalized for cinematic purposes. |
What does the series have room to explore?
With eight episodes, Mission Over Mars can return to multiple threads rather than resolving everything in one feature-length arc. ZEE5’s episode descriptions include restricted funding, launch problems, scientists balancing parenthood and work, procedural issues, and requests for international cooperation. This gives the series room to distribute attention among its central women and recurring workplace and family conflicts.

The four central cast members named by ZEE5 are Sakshi Tanwar, Mona Singh, Nidhi Singh, and Palomi Ghosh. ZEE5’s 30 August 2019 announcement gives the premiere date as 10 September 2019 and calls the show a fictional adaptation; the description and episode listings appear in its catalog listing.

Hope Productions’ synopsis centers on Rakesh Dhawan, played by Akshay Kumar, and Tara, played by Vidya Balan. After a failed GSLV launch, they present a Mars plan to the head of ISRO. The producer describes the project as a 2019 film directed by Jagan Shakti, with Shakti, Nidhi Kondiparthi, and Saketh Kondiparthi on the writing team and R. Balki as writer and creative director. The ensemble also includes Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, Kirti Kulhari, and Sharman Joshi.
Compared with the series, the film concentrates its story in a shorter, star-led arc. That is a difference in dramatic construction, not evidence that one is more historically faithful.
Which one is closer to the historical mission?
The available production descriptions establish that both draw on the Mars Orbiter Mission and fictionalize their stories. They do not establish that either title accurately portrays particular real scientists or provides a documentary account. For historical context on the people behind the mission, Scroll’s contemporaneous comparison points to Minnie Vaid’s book Those Magnificent Women and Their Flying Machines: ISRO’s Mission on Mars.
Scroll reported, attributing the figures to Vaid’s book, that the 500-strong science team included several women and that 27% were in leadership positions. This is a second-hand report of the book’s figures, not an official ISRO statistic independently verified here. The comparison is available at Scroll.
Where can you watch them?
ZEE5’s Mission Over Mars listing presents a subscription prompt, but catalog access can vary by region and date. Hope Productions’ Mission Mangal page links to Google Play; that does not establish current streaming availability in every country.
