How Music Changed in the 1960s: Rock, Motown, Folk, and Protest

Music in the 1960s became more stylistically diverse and socially visible, shaped by transatlantic exchange, Black musical traditions, folk-rock, and movement songs.

Music in the 1960s did not simply replace one dominant sound with another. In U.S. popular music, rock broadened and mixed with other styles, British groups reworked American rock and roll for U.S. audiences, and Motown brought gospel- and rhythm-and-blues-rooted soul further into the pop mainstream. Folk and spiritual traditions also gave civil rights and anti-war movements songs for solidarity and political expression. These changes were connected: musical styles crossed borders, audiences gave songs new meanings, and music served both commercial and collective purposes.

How did the British Invasion change popular music?

The exchange across the Atlantic ran in both directions. British musicians drew on American rock and roll, then developed their own approaches and carried them back to the U.S. market. The Library of Congress describes the resulting phenomenon as the “British Invasion,” led by groups including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

The Beatles’ U.S. breakthrough helped open the way for other British acts. In March 1964, they held the top five U.S. singles, an achievement the Library of Congress calls unprecedented. That is a specific chart milestone in a specific month—not a measure of the whole decade or every music chart.

The movement of “The House of the Rising Sun” shows how songs could travel and change along with the performers. The song came through American folk and blues traditions; Bob Dylan recorded it in 1962, and the Animals released their version in 1964. The Supremes also recorded it that year. This was not simply British music displacing American music: musicians on both sides of the Atlantic adapted material and sent it back into circulation.

How did rock broaden, and what was folk-rock?

By the early 1960s, rock and roll and music influenced by it were already established in the mainstream. Rather than remaining a single, fixed style, rock drew on a wider range of influences. A self-conscious folk-rock style emerged, combining elements of folk with rock arrangements. Some early examples used accessible chords and harmonies that invited listeners to sing along.

Songs could also take on meanings beyond the circumstances that prompted them. Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” was inspired by street clashes over a Los Angeles curfew in late 1966. Many listeners understood it more broadly as a reflection on protest and urban violence. Its history illustrates a distinction worth keeping: a song’s immediate inspiration is not always the same as the meaning audiences find in it.

How did Black musical traditions and Motown shape the decade?

African American musical traditions were central to the development of U.S. popular music. The Library of Congress traces connections among spirituals, blues, gospel, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, and funk. These styles are related, but they are not interchangeable; describing their lineages helps show how musical ideas traveled without reducing distinct traditions to one sound.

Motown, founded in Detroit in 1959, helped establish Black singers in the U.S. cultural mainstream. Its soul sound combined gospel and rhythm and blues. The label’s artists included the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, the Supremes, and Stevie Wonder. Motown was an influential part of the story, not the whole of Black music in the decade.

What role did music play in civil rights and anti-war activism?

Music in the 1960s did more than express individual feeling or entertain. Spirituals, gospel, blues, and folk traditions provided songs used in the Civil Rights Movement. Participants sang on marches and used music to build solidarity, sustain psychological strength in the face of harassment and brutality, and pass time. The Library of Congress reports that Martin Luther King Jr. called these songs “the soul of the movement” in his 1964 book Why We Can’t Wait.

Folk music also gave voice to concerns about equality, justice, and opposition to U.S. involvement in Vietnam. But political music should not be treated as synonymous with folk: some songs addressed movements directly, while others did not. Nor should every song used by activists be mistaken for a song written specifically as a protest.

Was 1960s music only rock and protest folk?

No. A rock-centered account can miss how varied the decade’s music was. Smithsonian Folkways’ 1960s materials encompass civil rights songs, folk, peace songs, and electronic music. Commercial pop, movement singing, and experimental styles existed alongside one another; they served different audiences and purposes rather than forming a single musical progression.

This overview focuses on U.S. popular music and exchange between the United States and the United Kingdom. The Library of Congress and Smithsonian materials support those themes, but they do not amount to a comprehensive survey of music worldwide or establish statistical market shares for the decade’s genres. It is more accurate to describe several overlapping changes than to declare one style the winner.
