But its thriller plot departs from the rules in important ways, especially when Cardinal Lawrence receives outside information and a supposedly secret cardinal takes part. The film is best understood as a researched political drama, not a documentary account of what happens behind closed doors.
What Conclave gets right about the election
The film’s most convincing details are rooted in the formal process. The Vatican’s governing document, Universi Dominici Gregis, sets out the rules for the election and provides for cardinals to be secluded in Vatican City, with the Sistine Chapel as the voting venue. Electors are lodged at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, and access to relevant spaces is restricted during the election. Read the Vatican text.

Secret ballots and the count
Voting by secret ballot is real. The movie’s broad sequence—cardinals write ballots, take an oath, and the votes are counted before the ballots are burned—has been described as broadly accurate by PolitiFact and America. The film condenses and stages the ritual for dramatic effect, so its scenes should not be treated as a complete procedural manual.
Smoke as a public signal
The smoke is not a cinematic invention: it signals whether a pope has been elected. PolitiFact describes the film’s depiction as broadly right. That visible signal gives the public an update without exposing the cardinals’ private deliberations.

How long the election takes
A three-day election is plausible in light of recent conclaves, PolitiFact reports, but it is not a guaranteed timetable. The duration depends on the vote; the film’s schedule is a dramatic choice, not a rule.
Where the plot departs from the rules
Lawrence’s outside information
Cardinal Lawrence’s investigations and receipt of news from beyond the conclave are a major departure. PolitiFact’s expert source says receiving outside information during the conclave would violate its rules. Universi Dominici Gregis requires strict secrecy and regulates contact with electors. That tension is central to the thriller, but it is not a routine or permitted part of the election process.

Could Cardinal Benítez really vote?
The film’s surprise participant, Cardinal Benítez, says he was appointed in pectore—a cardinal whose appointment was kept secret. The film-focused fact-check by PolitiFact says a cardinal whose identity was not revealed before the appointing pope’s death cannot join the conclave. America likewise notes that even knowledge of an in pectore appointment does not give someone a vote. Benítez’s participation is therefore a consequential invention, not a plausible exception to the voting rules.
How realistic are the politics and atmosphere?
Political factions are simplified for drama
Conclave presents cardinals as members of sharply opposed political camps. Associated Press reporting cautions against treating liberal and conservative labels as a reliable map of how cardinals think, and cites an expert who characterizes the film’s politicking as exaggerated. The maneuvering makes the story legible as a thriller; it should not be used as evidence that real conclaves divide neatly into the same factions.

Convincing atmosphere is not the same as exact detail
AP’s reporting includes praise for the film’s effort to recreate the Vatican atmosphere, alongside a small costume observation: Vatican analyst Thomas Reese noted a difference in the shade of red used for the cardinals’ garments. The overall look can feel persuasive without every visual detail being exact.
The pope’s death rites
America says some elements of the film’s depiction of the pope’s death and immediate rites correspond to practice, while others depart from it. Those scenes are dramatized, so the film is not a dependable guide to the actual rites.

A practical accuracy check
| Element | How the film compares |
|---|---|
| Sistine Chapel, seclusion, and secret voting | Based on real rules and practice; see Universi Dominici Gregis. |
| Ballot ritual and smoke | Broadly credible in outline, according to PolitiFact and America. |
| Outside intelligence gathering | Conflicts with conclave secrecy, according to PolitiFact and the Vatican rules. |
| Benítez’s secret appointment and participation | Not supported by the rules described by PolitiFact and America. |
| Factional politics | More neatly polarized and more dramatic than experts say real conclave politics should be understood; see Associated Press. |
| Costumes and death rites | The atmosphere may be convincing, but some visual and ritual details differ; see AP and America. |
How to watch it as a documentary viewer
Separate what the film shows into two categories. Its venue, seclusion, ballot, and smoke draw on real procedures. Its secret investigations, surprise elector, and cleanly opposed political camps serve the thriller. That distinction explains why Conclave can feel grounded while taking major liberties with what the rules allow and what can be known about private deliberations.
