Georg Bühler’s years in Bombay gave his earlier training a practical and institutional setting: he taught Sanskrit, helped publish scholarly editions, worked in educational administration, and sought out manuscripts across the Bombay Presidency. Those activities built expertise and connections that travelled with him to Europe. After leaving India in 1880, he took a chair at the University of Vienna and helped develop its Indology and Oriental Studies. Bombay was a major foundation of his later prominence, though the available biographies do not identify it as the sole cause.

How Bühler came to Bombay

Bühler had studied classical and Oriental languages and researched manuscripts in England before an opportunity to teach in Bombay arose through Max Müller’s mediation. He arrived in 1863 and became professor of Oriental languages at Elphinstone College. His Bombay career therefore began with prior linguistic and manuscript training, not as a sudden change of direction.

At Elphinstone, his work included teaching Sanskrit and helping develop the college library. A historical biography also describes the college’s scholarly circle as fostering Indian scholars such as R. G. Bhandarkar, Shankar Pandit, K. T. Telang, and V. S. Apte. That is the biographer’s assessment of the circle’s influence, rather than a measurable claim that Bühler alone produced their scholarship. How teaching became collaborative publishing

In 1865, Bühler and Franz Kielhorn founded the Bombay Sanskrit Series. Its editions were prepared for higher education in India and also became useful to Sanskrit scholars in Europe. The series connected teaching and scholarship: edited texts could serve students locally while circulating as reference works in a wider scholarly world. Bühler edited works including the Pañcatantra and Daśakumāracarita. The University of Vienna later identified him as a co-founder of the Bombay Sanskrit and Prakrit Series. How educational inspection opened a path to manuscripts

From 1868, Bühler also served as an educational inspector in the Bombay Presidency. His official journeys became opportunities to look for manuscripts, meet scholars and library owners, and arrange cataloguing. Fieldwork broadened his scholarship beyond teaching and editing: the biographical accounts connect these travels with his expertise in inscriptions and regional languages. Deutsche Biographie reports that Bühler acquired 2,876 manuscripts for the Indian government over the period 1866–1881. The figure belongs to that source and period; it should not be read as a total for Bombay alone or for a single tour. The entry also notes additional materials acquired for European libraries. What Bombay contributed to his European career

The Bombay years joined several kinds of work that reinforced one another: classroom teaching gave him a role in Indian higher education; the Sanskrit Series turned editing into published scholarship; inspection and travel brought him into contact with manuscripts and local scholarly networks. Catalogues, reports, and editions helped carry the results beyond the Presidency. This combination is why Bombay is best understood as a major foundation for his European standing, not a single explanation for it.

From Bombay to the University of Vienna

Bühler left India in 1880 and was appointed to a chair at the University of Vienna. There he helped develop the university’s Indology and Oriental Studies and continued research in Indian law, literature, epigraphy, and palaeography. The University of Vienna describes him as an important figure in the institution’s development. The move to Vienna extended work already shaped by his experience in Bombay rather than replacing it with an unrelated career.
