Ryan Wedding competed for Canada in giant slalom snowboarding at the 2002 Winter Olympics. U.S. prosecutors later accused him of leading a transnational cocaine-trafficking enterprise and involvement in murders. He was apprehended in January 2026 and pleaded not guilty at his first U.S. court appearance. The charges remain allegations, not convictions.

Who is Ryan Wedding?

Wedding represented Canada in giant slalom snowboarding at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002, according to the FBI’s case page. More than two decades later, U.S. authorities described him as a fugitive wanted in connection with an alleged international drug operation. The public record cited here does not establish a personal motive or explain a verified turning point between his sports career and the criminal allegations.

What do U.S. authorities accuse him of?

The FBI says Wedding allegedly led a network that moved hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from Colombia through Mexico and Southern California to Canada and other U.S. locations. Prosecutors have also accused him and associates of ordering or participating in murders and attempted murder connected to drug crimes. These are allegations in indictments and official statements; they have not been established as facts at trial.

Alleged violence described by prosecutors

A November 19, 2025 Department of Justice announcement alleged that Wedding placed a bounty on a witness in a federal narcotics case and enlisted others to locate and kill him. Prosecutors said the witness was shot at a restaurant in Medellín, Colombia, on January 31, 2025.

The same DOJ announcement described charges connected to the November 2023 killings of two members of a family in Caledon, Ontario, and the serious injury of another family member. Prosecutors alleged the attack was retaliation for a stolen drug shipment. The allegations are charges, not findings of guilt.

Official estimates of the alleged operation’s scale

At a November 2025 press conference, U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi described the alleged network as moving 60 metric tons of cocaine per year and generating more than $1 billion annually in illegal drug proceeds, according to the FBI’s report of the announcement. Those figures are officials’ estimates, not independently verified totals or a court finding.

How the case developed

  • 2002: Wedding competed for Canada in giant slalom snowboarding at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
  • June and September 2024: Indictments charged Wedding and others in connection with a continuing criminal enterprise, cocaine offenses, murder, and attempted murder, as summarized by the FBI. Charges are accusations, not convictions.
  • March 6, 2025: The FBI added Wedding to its Ten Most Wanted list. The contemporaneous State Department reward was up to $10 million, in addition to an FBI reward offer, according to the FBI case page.
  • November 19, 2025: The Justice Department announced a new indictment and arrests of associates in connection with the alleged murder of a federal witness. DOJ and FBI accounts described the State Department reward as increased to up to $15 million. That was a search-era offer, not a current active reward after Wedding’s apprehension.
  • January 23, 2026: The FBI case page, updated April 16, 2026, says Wedding was apprehended on this date.
  • January 26, 2026: The Associated Press reported that Wedding pleaded not guilty at his first U.S. court appearance.

Was Wedding arrested or did he surrender?

The accounts reported at the time differed. The Associated Press reported that Mexican officials characterized Wedding’s arrival at the U.S. Embassy as a voluntary surrender. His defense lawyer, Anthony Colombo, said after the January 26 hearing: “He was arrested. He did not surrender.” The AP account did not resolve the discrepancy. The FBI confirms the apprehension date, but the circumstances should be described as disputed.

What the “drug lord” headline does—and does not—mean

“Drug lord” is a dramatic shorthand for the role prosecutors allege Wedding held; it is not a judicial finding. The distinction matters because he pleaded not guilty, and the charges must be tested in court. The case’s public narrative links a documented Olympic appearance with serious allegations, but the available reporting does not provide a verified personal explanation for how or why that alleged transition occurred.
