Apple’s Emoji Game asks you to drag emoji into blanks to complete a phrase; other games ask you to guess a phrase from an emoji clue. Here’s how to play each kind.
How Apple’s Emoji Game works
Apple’s Emoji Game is a phrase-completion puzzle. Rather than entering a fixed-length word and using colored letter feedback as in Wordle, you complete missing parts of a word or phrase with emoji. A clue may rely on a literal image or on a word association or pun: launch-era examples included a pear completing “disappear” and fish plus a ghost representing “school yearbook.”
Play a puzzle
- Open the game in the News app if Apple News+ puzzles are available to you.
- Read the incomplete word or phrase and any hint shown with it.
- Consider both what each available emoji depicts and the words or ideas it might suggest.
- Drag an emoji into the blank it completes.
- Continue until you have completed the puzzle.
Launch-era reports described a daily puzzle, with one report mentioning six phrases and a six-turn goal and another describing a goal of solving in as few moves as possible. Those accounts do not establish a current move limit or scoring rule, so check the game’s on-screen instructions rather than assuming a particular target.
Where to find Apple’s game
AppleInsider reported that the game launched with Apple News+ on iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4 and macOS 15.4, and that Apple News+ puzzles were not available internationally at that time. A July 2025 UDFSoft report described availability in the United States and Canada. These are dated launch-era reports, not confirmation of current device or regional access. Check the News app and Apple’s current availability information for your location.

These alternatives share emoji clues, but they are not necessarily fill-in-the-blank games like Apple’s. Their platform and regional restrictions are not fully established by the available descriptions.
How to approach an emoji clue
- Start with the literal object or action shown, then try saying its name aloud.
- Look for sound-alikes, parts of words, familiar expressions and combinations of ideas.
- Use visible blanks, word counts or letter counts when the game provides them.
- Distinguish a phrase-guessing game from a phrase-completion game: one asks you to infer an answer, while the other gives you a phrase with missing parts to fill.
No special equipment is needed for the games described: Apple’s version is associated with Apple News+, Symbology is played on its website, and Vizzy is listed as an app.
