Assamese film fan Jayanta Sharma helped bring Dr Bezbarua, Brajen Barua’s 1969 thriller, back to audiences after years out of circulation. His search led to a badly damaged U-matic High Band copy in 2002; finding a player that could handle the format made it possible to convert the film. It screened in Guwahati on June 27, 2006, for the first time in many years, according to Scroll’s account of the rediscovery.
Why was Dr Bezbarua difficult to see?
The film opened at Dibrugarh’s Rangghar cinema hall on November 7, 1969. Years later, its surviving prints were damaged or inaccessible. Scroll reported that both the producer and the National Film Archive of India had damaged prints that could not be projected. The original negatives had been processed at Film Services, a Kolkata laboratory, but the copy Sharma eventually recovered was not described as a negative.
How did Jayanta Sharma find a viewable copy?
He traced the film through its processing history
Sharma, a cinephile from Dibrugarh, contacted Film Services. The laboratory initially refused his request, but later found a highly damaged print on its premises. A separate lead from a source in Guwahati ultimately helped Sharma rediscover the movie in 2002. Scroll’s report does not identify that source.
The U-matic tape required a compatible player
The recovered copy was on U-matic High Band, a videotape format. Sharma and an old Guwahati studio searched for a compatible player so they could play and convert the tape. That format-specific hurdle was part of the recovery: locating a copy alone was not enough if the equipment needed to read it could not be found.

The film returned to a public screening
Scroll dates the first screening in many years to June 27, 2006, in Guwahati. Its account does not give a preservation budget, count surviving copies, or quantify the screening’s audience.
What made the film significant in Assamese cinema?
Scroll calls Dr Bezbarua the first Assamese thriller to achieve immediate commercial success and says it was shot completely outdoors. The 2021 CINEJ Cinema Journal article describes production across locations in Assam and argues that the film encouraged commercial productions intended for big-screen release. The Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema’s entry on Brojen Barua also links the film’s influence to outdoor locations and the use of local technical and performance resources. These accounts position the film as an important turning point, though “first” and “pivotal” are attributed assessments rather than universally settled rankings.

The setting and production approach mattered in an industry that had made about 25 films in Assam between 1959 and 1969, nine of which received National Awards, according to Violet Barman Deka’s 2021 CINEJ article. That figure is industry context, not a production or awards tally for Dr Bezbarua.
What is the film about, and who made it?
Scroll describes a thriller shaped in part by conventions familiar from 1960s Hindi popular cinema: a lost-and-found family plot, romantic songs, Western-style dance numbers and comedy. Brajen Barua directed the film and played both the eponymous doctor and the villain in a double role. His younger brother Ramen Barua composed the music. Scroll quotes Ramen reflecting on being entrusted with it: “It’s still a mystery to me why [he] asked me to take [this] responsibility.”

The film also contributed to Nipon Goswami’s acting career after he trained at the Film and Television Institute of India, Scroll reports. Film critic Utpal Dutta summarized the production’s industry impact this way: “The film brought freedom to the Assamese film industry from the rule of studios and technicians in Kolkata.” That is Dutta’s assessment of its significance, not a neutral description of every aspect of Assamese film production.
