How Vice Media Became ‘A Fucking Clown Show’—and Why It Collapsed

Vice Media’s fall from a reported $5.7 billion valuation to bankruptcy involved more than a journalism setback. The Verge’s reporting describes cash and control problems, missed targets and disputed leadership responsibility.

Vice Media’s collapse was not just a story about journalism losing its edge. The Verge’s April 1, 2024, reporting describes a company that reached a reported $5.7 billion valuation, then struggled with cash, spending controls, budgets and an unsettled strategy before filing for bankruptcy in May 2023. The article’s sources disagree over how much blame belongs to founder Shane Smith or former CEO Nancy Dubuc; its broader account points to deeper operational and financial problems as well.

What happened to Vice Media?

Vice grew from a countercultural media brand into an ambitious company spanning news, video and production. The Verge reported that it reached a $5.7 billion valuation during its rise. By 2023, however, the company was in bankruptcy. The Verge says Fortress took over through a $350 million credit bid.

That arc is the context for the phrase in the headline. The April 2024 Verge story uses “a fucking clown show” to characterize the dysfunction described by people familiar with the company. It does not identify the person who used the phrase, so it should not be attributed to a named executive.

Why did Vice go bankrupt?

The reporting describes interlocking weaknesses, rather than one failed program or a single bad decision. It draws on interviews with more than 20 people, including investors, creditors, former executives and employees. Some allegations rely on unnamed sources, and the reported figures below should be understood with their stated attribution.

Cash pressure and weak financial controls

People interviewed for The Verge described delayed vendor payments, weak expense discipline and difficulty understanding budgets. These are signs of a company whose financial systems and oversight struggled to keep pace with its ambitions. They also help explain why the story’s account of Vice’s decline extends beyond the quality or popularity of its journalism.

The Verge identifies a $9.9 million arbitration judgment for unpaid bills to vendor Wipro as one of two factors behind the bankruptcy. The reporting also says Vice missed a $700 million revenue target for 2022 by more than $100 million, citing a person familiar with the company’s finances; that is not presented here as an audited result.

A costly deal and disputed expectations

Vice paid $134 million under the Vice World News deal in 2022, according to The Verge’s account of the company’s bankruptcy filing. The same article says Antenna’s website described the business as eight figures. Those descriptions do not establish that the deal generated a profit, and they should not be treated as equivalent financial measures.

Leadership, strategy and governance

The Verge’s sources differed over the relative responsibility of Smith and Dubuc. The story also describes inconsistent strategy and disputes about how the company was run. Its evidence supports a picture of responsibility spread across leadership choices and organizational shortcomings, not a settled verdict that one executive alone caused the collapse.

How did Vice’s ambitions turn into financial strain?

Vice’s rise rested on the promise that a distinctive media brand could become a large, durable business. But valuation and revenue targets are not the same as reliable cash flow or sound operations. The Verge’s reporting describes a gap between that scale of ambition and the company’s ability to track budgets, control costs and pay vendors consistently.

The reported $5.7 billion valuation captures the scale of Vice’s ascent as The Verge described it; it does not show what the company was worth at bankruptcy or how much investors ultimately recovered. Likewise, the $350 million credit bid is the figure the article reports for Fortress’s takeover, not a complete account of the company’s liabilities or the value of every asset.

What became of Vice’s journalism operation?

Vice’s bankruptcy marked a sharp break from its earlier identity as a growing media company. By April 2024, the company said it had exited day-to-day news and was shifting toward a studio model. Spokesperson Samira Sorzano described the plan as “producing and providing best-in-class content to distributors around the world.” That is Vice’s dated description of its intended direction, not independent confirmation of how well the model worked or what the company’s status is today.

The distinction matters: the reported bankruptcy and the company’s 2024 studio plan do not mean that every part of Vice’s business or its catalog disappeared. They do mean the company described a substantially different focus from its news operation.

What did Shane Smith and Nancy Dubuc say?

The Verge’s account records sharply different perspectives on leadership and responsibility. Dubuc, in a memo announcing her departure, said, “I am proud to leave a Vice better than the one I joined.” Smith, speaking in 2018 about the changeover, said, “We are a modern day Bonnie and Clyde and we are going to take all your money.” These quotations illuminate the public language around the company’s leadership; neither resolves the contested account of what caused its financial collapse.

What the reporting establishes—and what it does not

The Verge’s April 1, 2024, article documents a reported bankruptcy in May 2023, a takeover through a reported credit bid, and a company that had described a shift away from daily news. It also presents firsthand accounts of spending, budgeting and leadership problems. But many specifics come from unnamed sources, and the article does not make the allocation of blame between Smith and Dubuc definitive. It also cannot establish Vice’s status after the company’s April 2024 statement.
