Rosie Grant’s To Die For: A Cookbook of Gravestone Recipes commemorates the dead by pairing a dish carved on a headstone or associated with a grave with the story of the person connected to it. Its recipes are accompanied by family interviews and photographs, turning food into both something to make and a record of how someone is remembered.

A recipe inscription becomes a family story

A gravestone has little room for a life’s details. A recipe can open a door to them: what someone liked to cook, how they welcomed people, or what a familiar dish meant to those who gathered around the table. In To Die For, the recipe is not presented in isolation. Interviews with surviving relatives and photographs of the food, gravestone, and memorabilia give each entry a human context. The publisher’s description presents the book as a collection of 40 recipes found carved on headstones or connected to graves around the world.

That context can also restore practical details. In some cases Grant encountered inscriptions that listed ingredients but not instructions; relatives could explain how the dish was actually made and what it meant to the family. The inscription provides a starting point, while memory helps fill out the story.

Food as a personal form of remembrance

A recipe may have been chosen by the person before death or selected by relatives as a way to honor them. Either way, it can call to mind more than a list of ingredients: a particular cook, a family gathering, or the hospitality associated with someone’s table. The meaning belongs to the people connected to that dish; the book does not suggest that every family or culture commemorates the dead in the same way.

Grant has described the persistence of joyful memories after loss: “There’s still so much of them with you, and it shows up in a lot of really joyful ways.” The remark is her personal reflection, and it fits the book’s attention to food as one way a person can remain present in family life.

What recipes appear in the book?

Examples named in the publisher-derived description include spritz cookies, homemade fudge, chicken soup, French silk pie, and guava cobbler. The collection also ranges across sweet and savory cooking. A Westmont Public Library review describes sections for cookies and brownies, cakes and squares, rolls and bread, and savory dishes, and characterizes the book as weighted toward desserts. That is the reviewer’s impression, not a published numerical breakdown.

The recipes make the book usable as a cookbook, while the interviews and photographs make it a memorial record. For readers drawn to food history, family stories, or the ways archives preserve ordinary life, those strands are closely connected rather than separate features.

How the project began

Grant’s gravestone-recipe project began during her digital archives internship at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC. She went on to research and recreate recipes found on gravestones through her Ghostly Archive project. In interviews about the work, she has described talking with families to recover context and details that a brief inscription cannot contain. The Los Angeles Public Library’s interview with Grant and Jefferson Public Radio’s conversation with her offer background on that approach.
