How to solve the puzzle

Strands is a themed word-search game: connect adjacent letters in any direction to form words. Letters cannot be reused or crossed, and the theme words are highlighted when found. The Spangram expresses the theme and spans opposite sides of the board.

  1. Use the clue. “In neutral” suggests a color category rather than a place or object.
  2. Look for the Spangram. The answer is OFFWHITES. Finding it makes the category explicit.
  3. Search for related shades. Look for familiar off-white color names in the remaining letters. The starting-letter pairs above can help if you get stuck.
  4. Earn a hint if needed. Any non-theme word of four or more letters counts; finding three such words earns a hint that reveals a theme word.

Spoiler warning: full answer key

How the answers fit the theme

Champagne, cream, eggshell, ivory, linen, and vanilla are all names used for pale, near-white shades. OFFWHITES gathers them into the shared color family indicated by “In neutral.”
