He also described the film’s setting as fantasy, not historical fact.
What prompted the criticism?
ComingSoon reported on November 22, 2024, that a social-media comment questioned Parker’s casting because animated Astrid was depicted as White. The commenter also noted that America Ferrera voiced Astrid in the animated film. The report does not establish that this view was shared by fans generally, or how widely the criticism circulated.
What did Dean DeBlois say about casting Nico Parker?
According to ComingSoon’s account of DeBlois’s reported Instagram response, the filmmakers auditioned many actors, including people who resembled their animated counterparts, before choosing performers they felt best embodied the characters’ spirit and personality.
“Exactly. We auditioned many actors for the roles, including actors who looked like their animated counterparts. But we chose the actors who best embodied the spirit and personality of the characters since the tribe in this version is made up of descendants of the finest dragon fighters from everywhere the Vikings had ever traveled (which historically was far and wide- Vikings mixed with many cultures).”

How to Train Your Dragon (2025) - Collector's Edition Blu-ray + Digital
- Runtime: 126 minutes
This was DeBlois’s stated casting rationale as reported by ComingSoon; it is not a verified direct transcript of the original social-media post.
Why did he describe the film as fantasy?
DeBlois’s explanation linked the casting choice to the live-action film’s fictional community: he said its members descended from dragon fighters from places Vikings had traveled. He presented that as world-building for this version, not as a claim that the film’s population reflects established historical fact.
He put the distinction plainly in the response as transcribed by ComingSoon:
“Still, we’re crafting a fantasy, not historical fact, and all will be revealed in time.”

Is the live-action film a shot-for-shot remake?
No. DeBlois said the adaptation would not reproduce the animated film shot for shot. Instead, he described the approach as keeping key moments, honoring the original, and embellishing and deepening its story without abandoning what fans love.
“We’re not making a shot-for-shot remake. We just stuck close to key moments to honor the original – which I remain very proud of. The teaser features a few of those moments. Instead of a completely new tale, we aimed to embellish and deepen, without abandoning the story that fans love.”
That describes the director’s reported intentions, not an independent assessment of how the finished adaptation handles its characters or story.
