Why did Matt LeBlanc step back from acting?
LeBlanc’s clearest explanation is his own: after a decade on Friends and two years on Joey, he intended to take a year off and relax. In a 2018 television appearance, as quoted retrospectively by Hindustan Times, he described enjoying the first year enough to extend it. He said the break eventually became “five or six years.”
That account makes the break sound less like a sudden career crisis than a choice that grew as he discovered he liked time away from work. The duration is his recollection, not a formal announcement that he had retired.
How busy was he before the break?
Friends made him a familiar face for a decade
Friends premiered on September 22, 1994, and ran through 2004. The Television Academy’s oral history describes the show’s gradual rise rather than an instant hit, and the ten-year collaboration among its cast and producers. The production also allowed cast members time for film work during hiatuses. Calling LeBlanc the “busiest man in Hollywood” is headline rhetoric, not a measurable description of his workload.

After Friends ended, LeBlanc continued as Joey Tribbiani in the spin-off Joey. His later television work included Episodes and Man with a Plan, and he hosted Top Gear, according to a 2024 report carried by Daily Express via PressReader. So the story is not that he stopped working when Friends ended; rather, he took a substantial break after a run of prominent roles.
What has LeBlanc said more recently?
At a Children’s Hospital Los Angeles gala in 2022, LeBlanc told Entertainment Tonight, “I’m taking some time off right now.” He added that he was enjoying “not having to do anything” and said he would let people know when that changed. That is direct evidence of a break at that time, but it is not a statement about his present plans.

Did Matthew Perry’s death cause him to leave Hollywood?
There is no evidence in the cited reporting that Matthew Perry’s death caused LeBlanc to stop acting or withdraw from public life. LeBlanc posted a farewell to his friend on November 14, 2023, after Perry died in late October. The Los Angeles Times reproduced LeBlanc’s words: “The times we had together are honestly among the favorite times of my life,” and, “It was an honor to share the stage with you and to call you my friend.” The tribute documents grief and friendship; it does not explain a career decision.

Neither description is established. In November 2024, a report in the Daily Express via PressReader said LeBlanc’s publicist dismissed retirement rumors with the word “Rubbish.” That was the publicist’s reported response, not a direct quote from LeBlanc. The same report included anonymous claims about his intentions; those claims are unverified and should not be treated as fact.

There is evidence of reduced visibility, but it is specific rather than absolute. In September 2025, AS reported that he had not posted publicly on Instagram since his Perry tribute and had been seen at a Shakira concert. A long gap between public posts is not proof that someone has vanished from public life, and it tells readers little about private activities.
