Tell children that the Maccabees helped the Jewish people reclaim and rededicate the Temple in Jerusalem, and that Jewish tradition says a small amount of oil kept its lamp burning for eight days. Hanukkah lights remember the story. For adults and older children: the revolt and Temple rededication appear in the early books of 1 and 2 Maccabees, while the familiar oil story comes from later Jewish tradition.

A short Hanukkah story to tell a child

“Long ago, the Jewish people wanted to keep their traditions and worship in their own way. The Maccabees helped them regain the Temple in Jerusalem and make it ready for Jewish worship again. Jewish tradition tells that when they found a little pure oil for the Temple lamp, it lasted for eight days. Today, Jewish families light Hanukkah lights for eight nights to remember the story and bring light into their homes.”

This simple version keeps the focus on the people, the Temple, the oil tradition and the lights. For a younger child, there is no need to describe battles graphically.

What is history, and what is Jewish tradition?

Hanukkah remembers the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire, a Hellenistic state, and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. The Maccabees are also known as the Hasmoneans. The National Library of Israel says the rededication is likely the source of the holiday’s name: “hanukkah” means “dedication” in Hebrew. National Library of Israel: Hanukkah

The early accounts in 1 and 2 Maccabees describe the revolt and rededication. The familiar story that a small quantity of pure oil lasted eight days is a later Jewish tradition; the National Library of Israel notes that it does not appear in those books or in Josephus’s account. For a child, an accurate way to introduce it is: “Jewish tradition tells that…”

That distinction does not make the oil story less meaningful to families who tell it as part of Hanukkah. It helps children understand that a holiday can be remembered through both historical accounts and traditions passed down over time. A child-oriented devotional telling from Chabad Jewish Kids also includes the Maccabees, the oil miracle and the nightly lights: The Story of Chanukah in Brief.

How to adapt the explanation by age

For younger children

Keep the story short: the Maccabees helped restore the Temple, Jewish tradition tells of oil lasting eight days, and families light Hanukkah lights. If a child asks about fighting, answer simply and calmly rather than adding graphic detail.

For older children

Add that the Maccabees’ revolt was against the Seleucid Empire, and that the early books of 1 and 2 Maccabees tell about the revolt and Temple rededication. Explain that the oil story is found in later Jewish tradition rather than those earliest accounts. Avoid making the conflict sound like a simple modern national struggle or suggesting that all Jewish people held the same view of Hellenistic culture.

Connect the story to Hanukkah at home

Hanukkah is observed for eight days beginning on 25 Kislev. In the custom described by the National Library of Israel, a light is added on each night, and a shamash is used separately. Family practices vary, so describe the custom as one many families follow rather than a rule for every household.

Hands-on details can help a child remember the story. Some families play dreidel, eat foods fried in oil, such as latkes or sufganiyot, or give gelt (money). These are customs, not requirements. The National Library of Israel also provides Hanukkah stories and educational resources, including a printable dreidel activity: National Library of Israel: Hanukkah.

Answer a child’s likely questions

Why are there eight nights?

The familiar explanation says that the small amount of oil lasted for eight days. Other explanations for the festival’s length are also discussed in Jewish sources; it is safest to present the oil account as a well-known tradition, not as a detail recorded in the earliest Maccabees accounts.

Who were the Maccabees?

They were the leaders associated with the revolt and the Temple’s rededication. They are also called the Hasmoneans.

Do all families celebrate the same way?

No. The story and eight-day festival are central, while customs such as games, foods and gifts can differ from family to family.

Choosing a storybook or activity

A Hanukkah storybook for kids can give you a ready-made version to read aloud; choose one that suits the child’s age and makes clear whether it is telling the oil account as tradition or focusing on the historical events. No particular title or edition is recommended here. A dreidel or printable activity can make a useful follow-up, but neither is needed to explain the story.
