Historical reporting puts his earnings above $70 million for the 1996 original and at $92 million for Mission: Impossible II. For the seventh and eighth films, Variety reported upfront fees of $12–14 million per film plus significant gross participation, but not his final earnings. These figures describe different kinds of compensation and cannot be added into a reliable franchise total.
What is known about Cruise’s pay for each film?
The available figures come from different kinds of sources and compensation arrangements. The early amounts are historical earnings reported in a case-study excerpt hosted by NYU Stern, which cites earlier reporting; the later figure is a prospective deal report by Variety. Neither provides a complete accounting for the franchise.
| Film | What reporting establishes |
|---|---|
| Mission: Impossible (1996) | More than $70 million in reported earnings, according to the NYU Stern-hosted case-study excerpt, which cites Epstein (2005). The account connects the amount to Cruise’s participation in receipts; it is not an audited studio disclosure. |
| Mission: Impossible II (2000) | $92 million in reported earnings in the same excerpt. It describes gross and home-video participation terms for the deal. |
| Mission: Impossible III (2006) | The excerpt says Paramount agreed to the same deal with Cruise, then describes a renegotiation during development. It does not report his final earnings. |
| Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) | The Los Angeles Times reported in 2010 that Cruise gave up a preferential share of ticket sales for the fourth film as deal structures changed. The article does not state his final compensation. |
| Rogue Nation (2015) and Fallout (2018) | A comparable, reliable final earnings figure is not established by the stronger sources cited here. |
| Dead Reckoning (2023) and The Final Reckoning (2025) | Variety reported in 2022 that Cruise’s upfront fee was $12–14 million per film, alongside significant first-dollar gross participation. The report described deal terms, not a final earnings total for either film. |

Why the figures do not add up to a franchise total
The early amounts are described as reported earnings that include participation, while the $12–14 million figure for the later films is an upfront fee. Variety also reported significant first-dollar gross participation for those films, but did not disclose the resulting backend earnings. A fee and an eventual participation payout are not equivalent measures, and the public reporting cited here does not provide final backend amounts for the later films.
#1 Best Overall
- Mission: Impossible - 6 Movie Collection [Blu-ray + Digital]
Film box-office grosses, production budgets, and franchise revenue cannot be used to calculate Cruise’s pay without contract terms and accounting records. Nor should percentages reported for an early film be applied to the whole series: the sources describe different terms over time.
What the reported deal terms mean
- Upfront fee: The negotiated payment specified before backend participation is calculated. Variety’s $12–14 million figure was reported per film for the next two installments in 2022, not as an all-in earnings figure.
- First-dollar gross participation: Variety described Cruise’s participation as tied to gross receipts before the studio reached break-even. The report did not state a final payout.
- Gross and home-video participation: The NYU Stern-hosted account describes the early films’ terms, including a 30 percent gross share and a 12 percent share of total video/DVD receipts for the sequel. Those terms should not be generalized to later films.
The same historical account reports $320 million in DVD and video sales for the original film. That is a reported sales figure for the film’s home-video market, not Cruise’s personal earnings.

What can—and cannot—be concluded
The strongest public figures identified for individual installments are more than $70 million for the 1996 film and $92 million for the 2000 sequel, both presented in a historical secondary account. The later films’ compensation is less completely disclosed: a 2010 report describes a changed arrangement for Ghost Protocol, and Variety’s 2022 report gives upfront terms and participation for the seventh and eighth films rather than final totals. No reliable all-film figure follows from these sources.
