During the COVID period, they worked on Dylan songs by video call several times a week, with Saltzman helping him study the details of Dylan’s guitar technique. The film’s production notes describe five years of overall musical study and training—not five years of guitar lessons alone.
Chalamet had picked up a guitar before the Dylan role
Chalamet was not starting from nothing. He told the Associated Press that he had picked up a guitar while making Call Me by Your Name to play chords for a song in the film, which gave him what he called a “really rudimental experience with that.” It was a modest starting point rather than evidence of extensive prior guitar training. He studied with guitarist Larry Saltzman
Chalamet said his first lesson with Saltzman came around 2018. He described the teacher as becoming “less of a teacher and more a co-sanity artist through COVID,” reflecting how the preparation continued during a difficult period. Chalamet recalled meeting remotely three or four times a week and working through Dylan songs, including material that ultimately did not make it into the film. Associated Press
Practice focused on Dylan’s songs and playing style
The work was not only about learning chord sequences. Saltzman’s account, reported by Guitar.com from an interview with MusicRadar, says he helped Chalamet break down aspects of Dylan’s guitar technique. Chalamet named songs he gravitated toward during preparation, including “Girl From the North Country,” “Boots of Spanish Leather,” “One Too Many Mornings” and “Tomorrow Is a Long Time.” Guitar.com

What “five years of training” means
Searchlight Pictures’ production notes describe five years of intense musical study and training for the role. Chalamet’s account places his first guitar lesson with Saltzman around 2018. These details describe an extended preparation period, but the studio’s five-year figure covers musical preparation overall; it should not be read as five continuous years of guitar lessons. Did Chalamet play guitar in A Complete Unknown?
Searchlight describes Chalamet as singing as Dylan, and the production notes say viewers hear him singing and playing songs on set. That supports saying his preparation included performing both singing and guitar for the film. It does not establish that every part of the finished soundtrack is a single uninterrupted live take. The interviews and production materials do not provide a full lesson plan, a daily practice-hour total, or the exact Yamaha model. Chalamet’s account does establish the broad sequence: a little earlier guitar experience, lessons with Saltzman beginning around 2018, and frequent remote song work during COVID.
