He felt lucky to join the cast, valued his natural chemistry with Dan Levy, and approached Patrick not as an attempt to “play gay,” but as a man falling in love with another man.
Reid found Patrick’s relationship with David rewarding to play
When Reid auditioned, he did not know how long Patrick and David’s relationship might last. In a 2018 interview with My Theatre | My Entertainment World, he recalled feeling “super, super lucky” to join the show and said the part was “so much fun.” He praised the relationship’s nuanced writing and the room it gave the actors to test each other and play with their growing comfort.
Reid also described Patrick as open to a new experience and a different kind of relationship. He called playing him a privilege; that describes his experience with the role, not a claim that Patrick was identical to Reid.
He focused on a person falling in love, not on performing a stereotype
In a 2022 interview with The Daily Beast, Reid explained that he did not want to perform a generalized idea of gayness. He said, “I thought it would be mistake to ‘play gay.’ I thought, ‘What I can play is a man who falls in love with another man, and build that connection into the character.’”

Reid said he loved Patrick’s comfort with himself and his willingness to follow what he wanted. His approach kept the performance centered on Patrick’s particular feelings and choices rather than treating his sexuality as a shorthand for how to act.
Reid and Levy had chemistry, but Levy was initially unsure
Reid said Levy made the collaboration easy: “Dan [Levy, who plays David] made that very easy. We have a natural chemistry, and we’re good friends to this day.” He also described watching Levy shape the relationship as an “incredible” opportunity, saying it was handled “with a lot of care and a lot of love” and was deliberately crafted to matter to viewers.

Levy’s account in a 2019 GQ interview provides a useful counterpoint: he hoped Patrick would become David’s romantic interest, but he had not acted with Reid before and could not know how their chemistry would work. Levy said the kiss at the end of season three might have led to more—or nothing.
Levy also said he wanted David and Patrick’s highs and lows to resemble those of a heterosexual couple, in the fictional town of Schitt’s Creek, where homophobia and bigotry were not present. That was Levy’s stated intention for the story, rather than a universal interpretation of the series.

How Reid developed “Simply the Best”
Reid received the script shortly before a read-through and spent about a month working on his arrangement of Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best,” according to his 2018 interview. He experimented with tone, tempo, key and energy, aiming to retain the song’s drive while making the performance emotionally relevant. He said combining acting and playing music was especially enjoyable.
Levy recalled that the open-mic scene put David in a vulnerable position: he was falling in love and worried Patrick might perform badly in front of other people. Reid’s demo reassured Levy that the scene would work, and the performance changed the relationship in a way Levy had not expected.
