Pikachu’s rise was not a single breakthrough so much as a sequence of introductions: first in Pokémon’s Japanese Game Boy games, then through cards and television, and later through U.S. releases, film and merchandise. The documented timeline explains how the character reached more audiences, though it does not identify one event as the cause of its eventual icon status.
Who created Pikachu?
Pikachu’s origin is a collaborative story. The Pokémon Company’s creator profile credits Atsuko Nishida, Koji Nishino and Ken Sugimori in the character’s development. It distinguishes their roles: Nishida worked as a character designer for Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, Sugimori handled the official character design, and Satoshi Tajiri decided Pikachu’s species while writing its setting text. The official creator profile presents these contributions rather than assigning the character to one person.
Sugimori has also described how he helped keep Pokémon designs consistent. In a Nintendo interview, he said he drew the final official illustrations and, before pixel art was created, drew Pokémon from several perspectives so he could unify differences between illustrations. His examples were Snivy, Tepig and Oshawott, not Pikachu, so the account offers context about the franchise’s design workflow rather than a record of a Pikachu-specific revision. Nintendo’s Iwata Asks interview includes his explanation.
When did Pikachu first appear?
Pikachu entered the public through the original Japanese Game Boy games. The Pokémon Company dates the launch of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green to February 1996; TIME’s retrospective gives the specific date as February 27, 1996. This is the game-era starting point for Pikachu’s documented journey, not evidence that the character was already a global mascot at launch.

The game’s release was followed quickly by other formats. The official chronology records the Japanese Pokémon Trading Card Game launch in October 1996 and the Japanese television anime launch in April 1997. These dates show the franchise broadening the ways people could encounter Pokémon within little more than a year of the games’ debut.
How did Pikachu reach audiences in the United States?
The U.S. rollout brought games and television to the market in September 1998: the anime debuted, and Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue launched. The official chronology then places the U.S. release of Pokémon The First Movie in November 1999. In sequence, those milestones added television and theatrical film to the game and card formats already associated with the franchise.

Promotion also made Pikachu visible beyond the screen. TIME’s account of the period describes a Topeka event held before the North American anime debut, where a child hugged a giant Pikachu plush. It is a telling snapshot of the character being used in public-facing promotion, but one anecdote cannot establish that this event—or any single campaign—made Pikachu popular.
What does the timeline show—and what can’t it prove?
| Date | Milestone | What it adds to Pikachu’s media story |
|---|---|---|
| February 1996 | Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green launch in Japan for Game Boy. | The original game-era entry point. |
| October 1996 | Pokémon Trading Card Game launches in Japan. | A second format arrives in the franchise’s first year. |
| April 1997 | Pokémon television anime launches in Japan. | Television offers another route to the characters. |
| September 1998 | U.S. anime and Pokémon Red/Blue launches. | The rollout reaches U.S. television and game audiences. |
| November 1999 | Pokémon The First Movie launches in the U.S. | The franchise adds a U.S. theatrical release. |
| October 2000 | The company name changes to The Pokémon Company as business activities expand. | Institutional context for the expanding franchise, not a direct explanation of Pikachu’s fame. |
| July 2016 | Pokémon GO is released. | A later expansion into a new play format. |
The chronology establishes an accumulation of exposure across games, cards, television, film and merchandise. It does not isolate the effect of any format, promotion or design choice, and the sources here do not supply a comparable audience or sales measure that would quantify Pikachu’s growing popularity.

Why is Pikachu the Pokémon mascot?
The sequence helps explain why Pikachu became a recognizable emblem: the character was present as Pokémon expanded across formats and markets, and TIME’s reported plush appearance gives a concrete example of its use in promotion. But the available accounts document contributors and milestones, not a definitive decision or single cause that made Pikachu the franchise symbol. The best-supported answer is cumulative visibility, with the precise weight of each factor left unmeasured.
There is a useful boundary between documented history and added lore, too. Pokémon Support says that questions not answered in the games, animated movies or television are intended to be left to fans’ imaginations and interpretations. That guidance argues for distinguishing what the official record says about Pikachu’s creation from speculation about unrecorded motives or hidden design stories. Pokémon Support’s guidance was updated January 30, 2026.
