What does Cowaloosur mean by “Hindu nationalist robes”?
In her 5 February 2023 essay for Scroll.in, Cowaloosur describes a political framing in which Bhojpuri is presented as closely related to Hindi, Hindi is associated with India, and Bhojpuri is then claimed as a marker of Hindu identity in Mauritius. She writes that “Bhojpuri is being fashioned by Mauritian nationalist Hindu forces as a touchstone of Hindu identity in Mauritius,” and characterizes the relationship as presenting Bhojpuri as “a little sibling or offspring of Hindi.” These are Cowaloosur’s claims and formulations, not evidence that every Hindu Mauritian, organization, or Bhojpuri speaker shares that view. What is distinct about Mauritian Bhojpuri?
Cowaloosur calls Mauritian Bhojpuri “kalkatiya boli,” explaining the name as a reference to the language of Indian migrants who embarked for Mauritius from Calcutta. She distinguishes this locally developed variety from Bhojpuri varieties in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Nepal, and other overseas communities shaped by indentured migration. In her account, the Mauritian variety followed its own path rather than remaining interchangeable with those varieties or with Hindi.
She describes Bhojpuri as rooted in plantation and rural communities while crossing boundaries of ethnicity, religion, and caste. That history matters to her argument: if a language has circulated across such boundaries, presenting it as the possession or emblem of one religious identity changes its social meaning.

How can language become an ethnic or religious marker?
Patrick Eisenlohr’s academic study offers an earlier framework for understanding the process. In it, “ethnicization” refers to attaching language practices to ethnic values and group identity. His article’s abstract says that locally perceived “intermediate” registers between Hindi and Bhojpuri were used in Mauritian television broadcasting to represent Hindi as spoken in Mauritius and, at the same time, to link Mauritian Bhojpuri ideologically to Hindu identity.
Eisenlohr’s fieldwork took place in 1996 and 1997–98; the article was published in 2004. It provides scholarly precedent for analyzing how register choices and broadcasting could build that association. It does not measure the current scale of the framing Cowaloosur describes. Why does Cowaloosur write in a tone of mourning?
Her essay is not only an argument about political identity. Cowaloosur recalls stigma attached to Bhojpuri through associations with rural life, low income, oral use, and limited standardization. At the same time, she remembers the language as part of everyday inheritance: a way to pass on recipes, ritual knowledge, family memory, and intergenerational connection.
That combination—social devaluation alongside intimate cultural value—helps explain the essay’s sense of loss. Cowaloosur’s mourning concerns a relationship to language that she fears is being recast, as well as the language itself. It is personal reflection and political critique, not a representative account of what every speaker feels.

What can—and cannot—be concluded from these sources?
- Cowaloosur offers a clear account of how she believes some nationalist Hindu forces are connecting Mauritian Bhojpuri, Hindi, India, and Hindu identity.
- Eisenlohr’s 2004 article documents an earlier, specific context in which Mauritian broadcasting and linguistic registers were analyzed as linking Bhojpuri to Hindu identity.
- Neither source establishes how widespread the framing is today, or how language use varies by religion, age, region, or institution.
- The five-million-plus Bhojpuri mother-tongue figure mentioned in Cowaloosur’s essay lacks an identified original statistical publisher and year on the article page, so it should not be treated here as a verified current statistic.
