There is no publicly established drink quota that applies to every Big Brother contestant. Rules differ by country and season, and the public sources reviewed do not state a universal number of drinks per person. The clearest documented example is the UK show’s 2002 rules: alcohol supply depended on the housemates’ performance in weekly tasks, not an individual allowance.
Why there is no single answer
Big Brother is produced in multiple countries and across many seasons. A rule or practice reported for one version cannot establish what contestants may drink in another. In the public materials cited here, no current general rule sets a number of drinks per contestant.
That is different from proving that there is no limit. It means the published sources do not establish a universal allowance; a specific answer requires the country and season.
What the available sources say
| Edition and date | What the source establishes | Published individual quota? |
|---|---|---|
| UK, 2002 | The archived house rules say alcohol and other luxuries depended on the group’s performance in compulsory weekly tasks, which affected its shopping budget. Read the archived 2002 house rules. | No. The rule describes group supply, not a per-person quantity. |
| UK, 2023 | ITV’s published welfare package says housemates receive and are talked through house rules. It discusses welfare safeguards, but does not give an alcohol quantity. Read ITV’s welfare package. | No numeric allowance is stated in the cited public material. |
| Big Brother Naija, Season 6 | Africa Magic’s FAQ says contestants receive a rulebook setting out house rules; the FAQ does not state an alcohol allowance. Its silence does not show that alcohol is either allowed or prohibited. Read the Season 6 FAQ. | No numeric allowance is stated. |
| US edition, official series page | Paramount’s official series description does not disclose an alcohol allowance. View the official series page. | No numeric allowance is stated there. |
| US production account, 2017 | A Us Weekly report quoting producers described production as controlling what houseguests consumed in the confined setting. It does not establish a fixed amount or a current policy. Read the 2017 report. | No fixed quota is given. |
What older UK seasons can—and cannot—tell you
A 2022 Guardian feature recounts former contestants’ descriptions of plentiful alcohol in earlier UK seasons. Those recollections provide historical context for the show’s reputation, but they are not an official current rule and do not establish a policy for other editions. Read the Guardian’s historical feature.

How to interpret claims about a drink limit
- Ask which edition and season: a historical UK account, a Naija FAQ, and a US production report concern different contexts.
- Separate supply from a personal cap: the 2002 UK task rule tied the group’s supply to performance; it did not say how many drinks each housemate could have.
- Do not treat missing information as a rule: a public page that omits an allowance does not prove alcohol is banned, unlimited, or governed by a particular number.
