No reliable public figure establishes Joel Osteen’s current annual personal income. Reports say he stopped taking a salary from Lakewood Church in 2005, while identifying books and speaking engagements as sources of income. Those facts do not reveal how much he earns in a year.
What is known about Osteen’s Lakewood Church salary?
In a 2005 report, the Houston Chronicle reported that Osteen had stopped taking a $200,000 salary from Lakewood Church. He said he was living on profits from sales of his book Your Best Life Now. That is a historical account of his compensation at the time, not a disclosure of his current income.
Osteen later said he did not take a salary from Lakewood and described income from his books as a blessing, according to an interview published around 2013. That statement, too, concerns his church salary; it does not quantify what he earns from all sources today.
What are his reported sources of income?
Books and speaking engagements are identified as income sources in a 2026 TheStreet article. The sources reviewed do not establish how much he currently earns from either activity, or provide a reliable annual total across his personal income streams.

The Associated Press reported in 2024 that Your Best Life Now had sold nearly 3 million copies. That is a cumulative sales figure for the book, not Osteen’s royalties or income in any particular year. Sales alone do not show the author’s earnings; those would depend on financial terms and other accounting details not established by the figure.
Is the $55 million annual income claim reliable?
TheStreet says the frequently repeated claim that Osteen earns $55 million a year from books has no credible source. It should not be presented as a verified annual income figure. The sources reviewed do not provide a primary disclosure or independently documented calculation supporting it.

Why church finances and net-worth estimates do not answer the question
A church’s budget or organizational finances are not the same thing as a pastor’s personal income. IRS guidance describes compensation reporting for officers and key employees of certain tax-exempt organizations, but that general guidance does not disclose Osteen’s personal income or establish what any specific Lakewood filing reports. An organization-level figure cannot be treated as his personal earnings without evidence connecting the amounts.
Annual income and net worth are also different measures. Income refers to money earned over a period; net worth is an estimate of assets minus liabilities at a point in time. Neither a net-worth estimate nor Lakewood’s finances establishes Osteen’s earnings for a particular year.
