The story draws on the atmosphere and relationship tensions of 1970s rock, including Fleetwood Mac, but its characters are not verified portraits of real musicians.
Is Daisy Jones & The Six a real band?
No. The band and its history are fictional. Prime Video’s official feature describes The Six as a fictional band and identifies Reid’s novel as the source of the adaptation.
The show’s music does not change that. Amazon says the cast recorded songs for the fictional group, released as the album Aurora. Those performances are part of the adaptation, not evidence that The Six existed as a historical band.
Is Daisy Jones based on Stevie Nicks?
Reid has named Fleetwood Mac as an inspiration for the book’s mix of creative collaboration and personal conflict, not as a key to identifying Daisy or Billy as specific real people. In a 2019 Guardian interview, she said: “We’ve seen many examples of that in rock, the most obvious being Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.” She was discussing the contrast between making music together and having fraught personal relationships.

#1 Best Overall
That makes Fleetwood Mac a useful point of comparison for the story’s emotional and musical backdrop. It does not establish Daisy as Stevie Nicks or Billy as Lindsey Buckingham, and the characters should not be treated as confirmed biographies.
Were any characters inspired by real musicians?
Reid has described at least one other inspiration with an explicit qualification. In the same interview, she called Simone “a disco star very loosely based on Donna Summer.” “Very loosely” matters: it signals an inspiration, not a claim that Simone’s life, events or traits reproduce Summer’s biography.
Rank #2
For the novel overall, the distinction is between fictional characters, the cultural and musical influences behind the writing, and the real artists who supplied some of those influences. Inspiration alone does not make a character a portrait of a particular person.
Is the TV adaptation based on a true story?
No. The screen version adapts Reid’s fictional novel. The author’s book page presents the work as a fictional band’s oral history, and Penguin Random House’s listing identifies it as a novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, available in paperback and other formats.
Rank #3
The oral-history format and the show’s performed songs give the story a documentary-like texture, but they are storytelling choices. They do not turn the band or its members into real historical figures.

If you want the story in its original form, the novel is the source for the adaptation. For context on the kind of band dynamics Reid discusses, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours is a relevant listen; Reid has described the group as an inspiration, not the characters’ real-life identity.
