Leah Messer has described supporting her daughter Ali by seeking answers as Ali’s development differed from her twin sister’s, helping her navigate mobility needs, and letting her decide when she is ready to share her own story. The latest update in the reporting cited here, published by E! on February 2, 2025, said Ali, then 15, frequently used a wheelchair and that Leah wanted her to use a more accessible school entrance. These accounts offer a public glimpse of their experience, not a current medical record or complete care plan.
How Ali’s diagnosis became part of the family’s story
Leah Messer and Ali’s father, Corey Simms, sought medical answers after Ali and her twin sister, Aleeah, developed differently and Ali experienced developmental delays. A 2023 profile by Teen Vogue recounts early appointments, an MRI that required sedation, and the eventual diagnosis of a rare muscular dystrophy. Coverage of the diagnostic process on Teen Mom 2 described it as emotionally difficult for both parents.
An E! preview published February 3, 2014 identified neuromuscular specialist Dr. Tsao and reported that he explained Ali had congenital muscular dystrophy. The preview said he told her parents she would need a power wheelchair when she went to school. That was a forecast described in the episode coverage at the time; it should not be read as a current prescription or a prognosis that applies to every person with muscular dystrophy.
What has been reported about Ali’s mobility
In an update published February 2, 2025, E! reported that Ali, then 15, frequently relied on a wheelchair for mobility. The report also said Leah wanted Ali to use a more accessible entrance at school. Together, those details point to two distinct parts of the issue: mobility equipment and access to the school environment. The report does not establish Ali’s present-day arrangements, the specifics of her school access, or her current medical recommendations.

Seeking answers and responding to Ali’s needs
In interviews and show coverage, Leah has described continuing to seek answers and doing what was needed to support Ali. The family’s public story includes the uncertainty of the early diagnostic process and later practical questions around mobility and access. Those accounts describe Leah’s perspective; they do not provide a detailed or current care plan.
Equine therapy as a family experience
In 2023, Leah said equine therapy helped Ali grow physically and mentally and brought the family together. That is Leah’s account of their experience, not evidence that equine therapy is effective for muscular dystrophy or a substitute for clinical guidance. A TV Insider interview published August 16, 2023 also captured Leah’s approach to Ali speaking publicly: “I was waiting for her to come and tell me she was ready to write her own story.” Leah said Ali wanted to write her story; the interview does not establish that a book was published.

What these public updates can—and cannot—tell readers
The reporting identifies Ali’s condition as a rare or congenital muscular dystrophy, but the sources cited here do not verify her exact genetic subtype. The newest status update cited is E!’s February 2025 report, not a live account of Ali’s current health or care. Leah’s statements about therapy and family support are personal experiences, while the wheelchair forecast in 2014 belongs to the context of that episode and that time. Keeping those distinctions clear avoids turning a family’s public story into medical advice.
