Smallville makes Lex Luthor’s eventual villainy tragic not by excusing it, but by showing the person and relationships that precede it. He begins as a young man trying to escape his corrupt father’s shadow; as his friendship with Clark Kent curdles into enmity, his choices increasingly damage the very trust and connection he wants.
A villain’s origin told as a gradual loss
Rather than introduce Lex as an already complete Superman adversary, Smallville follows his evolution alongside Clark’s origin story. DC describes the early Lex as a well-meaning entrepreneur seeking to get out from under his corrupt father, Lionel, and the arc as ending in full super-villainy. That distance between the person he tries to be and the person he becomes gives the story its tragic force.
The series ran from 2001 to 2011, with Alfred Gough and Miles Millar among its executive producers, according to DC’s retrospective and DC’s series page. Its central dramatic question is not simply whether Lex will become a villain, but how his ambitions and relationships change as he makes that journey.
Trying to become more than Lionel’s son
Lex’s conflict with Lionel gives his early ambition a personal edge. Escaping his father’s shadow is not the same as escaping his influence: Lionel’s corruption shapes the world Lex wants to reject, while their repeated clashes keep that influence close. Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex, recalled that the pilot’s image of a domineering father helped viewers feel for his character. In Rosenbaum’s reading, Lex longs for connection: “I think Lex just wanted to be loved. He wanted to be appreciated. He wanted to be trusted. He never got those things.”

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That is the actor’s interpretation, not a clinical explanation or an absolution. The show’s sympathy comes from letting viewers see the need beneath Lex’s charm and ambition, while keeping his responses—and the harm they cause—within his control.
Clark’s friendship becomes the emotional fault line
Lex and Clark’s friendship makes the transformation matter beyond the Luthor family. DC describes them moving from best friends to worst enemies. Early closeness creates the possibility of trust; later suspicion and conflict make that loss feel personal. Lex’s desire to understand Clark and his growing distrust pull in opposite directions, and the relationship deteriorates as Lex acts on suspicion rather than preserving the bond.

This is not a simple, inevitable diagnosis in which hardship mechanically produces villainy. The tragedy lies in the widening gap between what Lex appears to want—trust, appreciation, a life apart from Lionel—and what he chooses when those hopes are frustrated. Each choice changes the relationships around him, rather than merely revealing a villain who was fully formed all along.
Turning points make the change consequential
DC’s retrospective identifies three defining milestones: Lex’s mental breakdown in season three, his murder of Lionel in season seven, and his return in the series finale. Together, they mark an escalation from vulnerability and family conflict toward actions that cannot be treated as ordinary setbacks. The sources establish these milestones, but do not support adding episode-specific details here.

Rosenbaum also recalled the scene in which Lex kills his father and a declaration that makes the new role explicit: “you were right about me all along, Mr. Kent. I am the villain of this story!” The line captures the cost of the transformation: Lex is no longer only resisting Lionel’s judgment or seeking Clark’s confidence. He has embraced the identity his choices have made possible.

DC says Smallville gave audiences “a more sympathetic side of Superman’s best-known villain.” Sympathy here means understanding the person and the losses that precede his fall, not approving what he does. The series connects Lex’s early hope of escaping his father’s legacy, his friendship with Clark, and the later acts that destroy trust and deepen conflict. Those connections let viewers feel the distance he travels—and recognize that the distance is crossed through consequential choices.

Rosenbaum said the show offered unusually extensive development through glimpses of Lex’s past and future and his repeated clashes with his father. That gradual portrait is what distinguishes a tragic transformation from a mere reveal: the audience can see the person Lex might have remained even as the story makes clear that his eventual villainy is his own.
