Ryan Gosling heard Sandra Hüller singing on the set of Project Hail Mary and asked if she would sing in the film. She agreed on one condition: she wanted to choose the song. Her pick was Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times,” which became a late-added karaoke scene designed to reveal something about Hüller’s character, Eva Stratt.
Gosling heard her sing and made the suggestion
Gosling said he heard Hüller’s voice down a hallway while they were filming aboard an aircraft carrier. In an account quoted by Gizmodo, he recalled asking, “You can sing like that?” When she said yes, he asked whether she could sing in the movie. Hüller was unsure at first, but the idea took shape when she said she wanted to choose the song.
The karaoke moment was not in the original script, according to Gizmodo’s account of interviews with the filmmakers and cast. It emerged during production rather than being a scene carried over from Andy Weir’s source novel. The Associated Press describes the film as an adaptation of Weir’s bestselling book and reports that Gosling felt Hüller’s character needed a song after hearing her sing.
Why Hüller chose “Sign of the Times”
Hüller selected Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times.” In a Universal Music Publishing Group article published March 24, 2026, and updated May 25, 2026, she explained that she wanted a song that felt like “a final goodbye to somebody.” Its references to space and going to the sky also resonated with her, she said: “I found it very moving.”

The choice connected the song’s farewell quality with the film’s setting and emotional stakes. Hüller also checked her selection with her daughter, according to Gizmodo’s account of the interviews.
How the directors shaped the scene
Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller saw the performance as a way to reveal Eva Stratt, not as a musical detour. In Rolling Stone’s interview with the directors, Lord said the team worked out how the moment could expose character. Miller said Hüller was asked to sing on short notice and wanted to select the song herself.

The filmmakers also adjusted the staging to make the singing feel motivated: Gosling’s character challenges Stratt, turning the request into a dare. They filmed the other characters’ reactions first so Hüller could have time to warm up, and the actors in those reactions did not know what was coming.
A quick production decision, with two separate deadlines
The accounts describe different points in a compressed schedule, not one single countdown. Rolling Stone says the directors asked Hüller to sing about 36 hours before the performance. The Associated Press reports that the filmmakers secured the rights to use the song within 48 hours. Those intervals refer to separate milestones; the available accounts do not establish a more exact sequence.

Universal Music Publishing Group confirms that “Sign Of The Times” appears in both the film and its trailer. The last-minute addition therefore required not only Hüller’s performance but also rapid music-rights clearance.
