Music helped give the reform-minded group a shared congregational practice; the available accounts do not quantify how much it sped social change.
Why music belonged in Roy’s reform project
Roy’s musical work formed part of a wider religious and social reform effort. The Brahmo Samaj, which developed from the Brahma Sabha, was a theistic society founded in Calcutta in 1828. Its reform concerns included caste and women’s status, according to the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

That context matters: the songs were not simply a musical diversion alongside reform. In a 2024 Scroll.in report, music studies scholar Partho Datta describes music as integral to community-building and congregational mobilization. That is a modern scholar’s interpretation of music’s role, not a statement documented in Roy’s own words.
Why Roy chose dhrupad for Brahma Sabha meetings
Saumyendranath Tagore’s 1966 account says Roy introduced Bengali-language dhrupad at Brahma Sabha meetings in 1828. Tagore characterizes the style as deep, simple and solemn—qualities Roy considered suited to worship. In that account, Roy regarded tappa and thumri as too light for the gatherings; this is a description of his choice for that setting, not a general ranking of musical genres.

The choice was culturally specific. Tagore writes that Bengali dhrupad songs were not known in Bengal in the first two decades of the nineteenth century, while dhrupad heard there was sung in Hindi. Roy’s Bengali compositions therefore adapted the form for a new religious community and language. The Cambridge University Press chapter “Rammohun Roy: His Songs and Contribution to Bengali Music” also highlights how little scholarly discussion has focused on his compositions and singing form.
How shared songs could support collective change
The 2024 Scroll.in report describes Brahma Sabha gatherings as combining prayer, sermon and music, with an elite, reform-minded audience. Music offered participants a recurring way to worship together and to take part in a shared practice. Datta compares its congregational and mobilizing role to the use of music in church, while music collector Rantideb Maitra calls music “the best expression of a new idea, a means to take it to more people.” Those are contemporary interpretations of music’s potential, not measured outcomes for Roy’s meetings.

The evidence supports describing music as one means of forming and mobilizing a community around reform ideas. It does not establish attendance figures, show how widely the gatherings reached beyond their stated audience, or calculate a causal effect on social change. “Accelerate” is therefore best understood as an interpretation of music’s contribution, not a quantified historical result.
What songs are associated with Roy?
Tagore’s account gives the number of Bengali dhrupad songs composed by Roy as thirty-two. The 2024 report uses the more cautious formulation “around 32” hymns believed to have been written by him. It is safest to treat this as a reported count rather than a definitively catalogued surviving corpus.

The Scroll.in report names “Bhabo Shei Eke,” “Bhoy Korile Jaare,” and “Nitya Niranjana” as songs still used in Brahmo congregations. Its performance caption spells the first title “Bhabho Shei Ekey”; retain the spelling used by the source when referring to that particular performance.

Roy’s Bengali dhrupad songs helped establish an early repertoire, but they should not be confused with all later Brahmo Sangeet. Later musicians, including Debendranath Tagore and members of the Tagore family, expanded the tradition and drew on tappa, khayal, folk music, thumri and kirtan. Some features of Roy’s compositions also relaxed traditional dhrupad demands, according to the 2024 report.

Dhrupad’s development in Bengal involved regional musicians and courtly patronage as well as changes in musical practice. The result was a tradition that evolved beyond Roy’s original use of the form. Dhrupad singer Nirmalya De, discussing the later tradition, says that Brahmo Sangeet still needed a singer with a strong classical foundation, while noting that older rules of practice are now rarely followed.
