Natascha McElhone spoke warmly and directly about working with David Duchovny: “I love working with David. I really love working with him.” In a 2013 interview, she also likened returning to Californication each year to going back to a “friend family.” Her comments describe a positive professional relationship and a familiar workplace—not evidence about their private lives.
What did Natascha McElhone say about David Duchovny?
In an interview with SiriusXM host Ron Bennington, an excerpt of which was published by The Interrobang on January 14, 2013, McElhone said, “I love working with David. I really love working with him.” It is an unusually explicit endorsement of her experience as his co-star on Californication. Read the interview excerpt at The Interrobang.

She also praised co-star Pamela Adlon and described the annual shoot as a fresh experience, in part because guest performers changed the atmosphere. Her “friend family” phrase captures her own sense of returning to a familiar group; it should not be taken as a claim that every cast member felt the same way.
How did the work fit into her life?
In a 2009 interview with The Guardian, McElhone described filming in Los Angeles for a few months over the summer, when her children were on school holidays. “For me, it’s a few months of the year, in summer, in LA. It’s the kids’ school holidays. It’s a no-brainer. It’s wonderful,” she said. The schedule and her description help explain why the job suited her, but do not add to what she said specifically about Duchovny. Read the Guardian interview.

The Guardian also reported that McElhone’s husband died while she was filming the series and that the producers gave her the choice to return to Los Angeles to finish it. She did return. That is context for her decision to continue working; it should not be treated as evidence of her feelings about any individual colleague.
What did she think of Californication?
In the Guardian interview, McElhone said she was not especially privy to the show’s sexual content because her character, Karen, was not involved in that aspect of the story. She recalled women in Los Angeles telling her they liked the show and said she had not encountered women telling her they found its sexuality or depiction of women offensive. Those are her personal observations, not audience research or a representative survey.

In the 2013 conversation, she called the series successful and “sort of groundbreaking in its own way,” while discussing broader changes in what television showed. She also joked that Karen’s willingness to stay with Hank for years might be a male fantasy: “no woman would put up with his shit.” That is her humorous reading of a fictional relationship, not advice about real ones.
