Tom Hanks was reportedly paid a $40 million salary for The Polar Express, plus a separate guaranteed 20% share of first-dollar gross. That percentage was an additional contract term, not a published calculation of his final total earnings from the film.
What was Tom Hanks’s reported salary?
The American Film Institute (AFI) Catalog says Hanks received a $40 million salary for The Polar Express. AFI attributes the compensation details to a Los Angeles Times report published November 17, 2004: AFI Catalog entry for The Polar Express and the Los Angeles Times report, November 17, 2004.

The $40 million figure is Hanks’s reported individual salary, not a combined amount for Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis.
What did the first-dollar gross share mean?
AFI records a guaranteed 20% share of first-dollar gross for Hanks. This was separate from his salary: it describes a participation term tied to the film’s gross receipts, not a final payout figure. The same AFI entry says Zemeckis was allocated a separate 15% share.

The sources do not calculate how much Hanks ultimately collected through that participation. The reported $40 million salary therefore should not be presented as a verified lifetime total, nor should it be combined with an estimated percentage payout.

Contemporary Los Angeles Times coverage described The Polar Express as a major financial undertaking. A report published October 22, 2004, put production costs at $170 million and global marketing and distribution at $125 million; these are figures reported at the time, not current-dollar estimates: Los Angeles Times, October 22, 2004.
In that report, Warner Bros. President Alan Horn said, “It is a big risk, and the decision to do any movie this expensive is not done lightly.” The project’s scale helps explain the context for the reported participation arrangement, but it does not establish Hanks’s eventual total compensation.
