She began with the day’s news rather than a personal statement, then became visibly emotional later, when colleagues and fans welcomed her outside the Rockefeller Center studio. Before returning, Guthrie said she could not pretend to be someone she was not—and that Today felt like family.
When Savannah Guthrie returned to Today
Guthrie’s last appearance before taking leave was January 30, 2026, according to CBS reporting summarized in the coverage. Her mother was reported missing on February 1. On April 6, Guthrie resumed her anchor role for the first time since the disappearance; the Associated Press described her absence as lasting more than two months. AP’s April 6 report covered her return.
She had visited colleagues at the studio on March 5, but that was not a return to the anchor desk. In March, she also spoke with Hoda Kotb in an interview that aired ahead of her planned return. The interview gave Guthrie a chance to explain why she intended to come back despite the emotional difficulty of resuming a program associated with joy and lightness.
Why she said she came back
Guthrie described Today as a source of belonging, not simply a job. In her interview with Kotb, she said: “It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness.” But she also explained, “I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not. But I can’t not come back because it’s my family.” The Associated Press reproduced those remarks in its March 26 report on the interview.

She did not promise to perform cheerfulness. Instead, she said, “I want to smile, and when I do it will be real,” and added, “Being there is joyful, and when it’s not I’ll say so.” Those were her own terms for returning: be present with colleagues, but not conceal what she was feeling or pretend that every moment was light.
How her first broadcast unfolded
She went straight to the news
On April 6, Guthrie opened with, “Here we go, ready or not,” followed by, “Let’s do the news.” She moved directly into the headlines. The disappearance was not discussed during the first hour; AP characterized the broadcast’s opening as a return to normal programming. Rather than make a personal monologue the focus of her first appearance, she resumed the ordinary work of the show.

The welcome outside the studio brought a different moment
Later, Guthrie joined colleagues and fans outside Rockefeller Center. AP reported that she became visibly emotional when she saw a “Welcome home Savannah” shirt, held Jenna Bush Hager’s arm, and thanked supporters. The contrast was plain: she had managed the opening portion of the broadcast as a working anchor, while the public welcome made the personal weight of the moment more visible.
What was known about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was reported missing from her Arizona home on February 1, 2026. Reporting at the time said authorities believed she had been taken against her will. In Savannah Guthrie’s first interview since the disappearance, she described the back doors as propped open, her mother’s phone and purse as still at the house, blood found near the front doorstep, and a camera that had been removed. These are details attributed to her account and the reporting; they do not establish who was responsible.

The Guthrie family offered a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s recovery, as AP reported. That is a reported family reward, not evidence of a breakthrough or an indication of the investigation’s progress. AP’s April 6 account said Nancy had not been found as of that report; that dated status should not be treated as a current update on the case.

Guthrie’s return showed how she chose to handle a difficult public transition: resume the work, accept support, and make no claim that she had to appear unaffected. Her own words made clear that she expected both genuine moments of joy and moments when being at work would not feel joyful. The broadcast cannot establish that her grief had eased, that the family’s uncertainty had been resolved, or how she felt privately beyond what she chose to say.
