Kurt Cobain approved Weird Al Yankovic’s “Smells Like Nirvana” and, according to Yankovic, found the joke funny. The parody poked at how hard it was to understand the lyrics of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The distinction matters: a 1992 Washington Post report said Nirvana had made no official public reaction at the time; the positive response it described came from Yankovic’s account of Cobain and Courtney Love watching the video.
What did Kurt Cobain think of the parody?
Yankovic’s account is that Cobain understood the idea quickly and gave him permission to make the parody. In a 2012 SPIN oral history, Yankovic recalled Cobain asking whether it would be a food song—food was what many people associated with Yankovic. Yankovic explained that the joke would be about listeners not understanding Cobain’s lyrics. He remembered Cobain replying, “Oh, sure, of course, that’s funny.” Yankovic also recalled Cobain telling him, “Of course you can do a parody.” These are Yankovic’s recollections, not direct quotations from a Cobain interview.
The basic exchange was also described in a contemporaneous Washington Post report published June 26, 1992. It said Yankovic called Cobain backstage during Nirvana’s Saturday Night Live appearance to ask permission and explained that the parody would make obtuseness part of the joke. That report supports the timing and premise of the request, but does not independently quote Cobain’s response.
How Yankovic got in touch with Cobain
Yankovic told SPIN in 2012 that his manager had tried repeatedly, without success, to reach Nirvana. He eventually got through to Cobain with help from his friend and former UHF co-star Victoria Jackson, who was then in the Saturday Night Live cast. Yankovic said he spoke with Cobain backstage during the band’s appearance on the show.

What “Smells Like Nirvana” was making fun of
The song’s target was the difficulty listeners had deciphering “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” not Cobain personally. In a 2022 Fresh Air interview, Yankovic recalled that people were asking, in effect, “what’s he saying?” and “what does it mean?” He described “Smells Like Nirvana” as one of his relatively few songs that comments on the original song or artist. The parody turns that confusion into its central joke.
What was said about Cobain and Love watching the video?
The Washington Post report noted that Nirvana had made “no official reaction” at that point. It then attributed a favorable account to Yankovic: he had heard that Cobain and Courtney Love watched the video ten times in a row, loved it, and wished him well. The reported ten viewings are an anecdote relayed by Yankovic, not an independently verified count or a formal statement from Nirvana.

In the 2022 Fresh Air interview, Yankovic said he had no regret about making the parody because “Kurt loved the song.” He also recalled feeling unsure about performing it in Seattle after Cobain’s death. Yankovic said he thanked Cobain solemnly before playing it and that the audience responded warmly; this, too, is Yankovic’s retrospective account.
